2020.10.28 19:08 TheBishop7 The 2020 playoffs are approaching. Who should I root for? (3.5 Weeks Remain)

You may remember this weekly post from the last six seasons. This post is designed to give you an idea of who to root for in MLS matches not featuring The Black & Gold, yet including teams that still have an effect on The Crew's final standings.

Last Week

Things actually went okay for the Crew last week, despite Philadelphia really pulling away with the Supporter's Shield and Seattle passing Columbus on goal differential.
Orlando dropped the ball in Miami, Seattle and Portland drew, and the Red Bulls dropped 3 points all but ensuring they can no longer pass Columbus in the standings.

2020.10.21 10:15 mannamedponcho17 Filed unemployment after COVID put MN under lockdown, last week before $600 benefits expire, I get a letter and email saying I was overpaid benefits.

MN went under lockdown around March 15, I was laid off both jobs and was recommended by both for file for unemployment benefits. I was hesitant at first because I’ve always worked and refused any government help. But my parents convinced me because it could help with bills in emergency cases. Though what the hell why not. They only needed my previous employment from before Oct. or 2019, by then I still had only two jobs. During the application process I am supposed to confirm my employment, chipotle and Minnesota United Soccer Club LLC, but heres the twist , my ssn showed another previous employment I never had for a gardening company . Thankfully there’s a checkbox to delete that employment history to confirm I never worked there. Fast forward July 19, 2020 , additional $600 unemployment benefit was set to expire the following weekend. I received a letter from Unemployment saying I was overpaid benefits and rolled back my employment date. $2,370. Now I only received one two letters from them saying something along the lines of confirm your employment wages . Ignore the letter if they are correct . Keep in mind, I have no other employment except for the ones described already (2) with no changes in wages or such (I am required to keep contact with both my supervisor and general manager for COVID related news and return to work dates) , I received an email saying I have an option to appeal , I called them for what seemed like an entire week as there were other people in similar situation as I was too. I finally got the call back and I asked them the reason why I was overpaid. The lady seemed very annoyed with me so she sent me through another departments to sort this issue out. Finally someone figured out what happened , turns out one way or another that third employment must’ve been used my someone stealing my identity, I told her I checked the box saying I’ve never worked there and made sure at the pre-submission window that all my information was correct unless it must’ve slipped up, she answered that some times the servers are bottle necked so I didn’t have time to register that checkbox (bullshit) she then asked me if I did work at that garden place I said no and then said that unless I would’ve told her I did work there she’d be able to help me fight it to an unemployment judge to dismiss the overpayments. Basically lie to them. Now I am pissed because this has happened to others, I cannot afford to pay $2370 at the moment as most of my unemployment went into helping my parents with groceries and paying off some loans and credit cards here and there. This came to the surprise when literally four days before $600 was set to expire . Oh and she said that they have been knowing about this third employment since before, they just didn’t think anything of it . To its seems troubling that they knew something was up and they didn’t even try to call or figure out why I’m claiming only two jobs when there’s a third one. I talked to someone about what I can do and they said I can take it in for fraud , it cost me my unemployment ( I didn’t go back to work until late august) and now I have someone using my identity for who knows what. What can I do? Obviously I want to sue whoever took my ssn and make them pay for the overpaid benefits but how else can I make sure they don’t use my SSN in the future .

Last Week

Apologies for not submitting a Friday post, but I was out of town and just not able to create the post. Doing this twice a week is a bit much...
Orlando, Philadelphia, and Toronto all drew their Wednesday games, which was a small victory with a Crew loss. Portland and LAFC both lost, while Seattle's match was postponed.
Over the weekend, the Crew got back on task with a much needed, scrappy home win against NYCFC. Orlando managed only a point again, while Toronto kept stride on the top of the table with a win. Portland and LAFC had a 1-1 draw, while Seattle also managed a point on the road.

2020.10.20 18:28 Buck_Joffrey Wealth Formula Episode 234: What You MUST Know about Estate Planning!

Catch the full episode: https://www.wealthformula.com/podcast/234-what-you-must-know-about-estate-planning/
Buck: Welcome back to the show everyone. Today my guest on Wealth Formula Podcast is estate planning attorney Joseph Longo. Now for 25 years, Joe has focused on delivering unparalleled service in the area of estate planning asset protection, and sports actually. His clients have ranged from businesses to high net worth families and professional athletes he has taught law school Los Angeles City College, Mission College, and Pasadena City College. He is currently an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School. He's also sat as a judge pro temp in the Los Angeles Court System. Joe is an Ivy League guy. He received his BA from Brown University in rhode island where he was a starting defensive back on the Brown University football team in the mid-80s. Joe, welcome back to the show.
Joe: Thank you, thank you very much Buck for having me.
Buck: Hey Joey I gotta ask, did you play at Brown when this guy I think he was on the Vikings, I think, Steve Jordan?
Joe: No he, okay so it's funny, he was a little bit ahead of me and I think I was a senior in high school and I was like a mid-major recruit like you know Washington State, San Diego State, Utah and my father who never went to college and lived the American dream when Brown University came to visit us to talk about going to school there my dad was really into it and Brown did a smart move they had that the one NFL player called the house Steve Jordan so my dad at that point said look if you go play in the NFL you got it covered but more importantly you're going to get a good education and of course I went there and got a good education.
Buck: That's great, that's great. Yeah it's funny I was trying to think actually when I read about the Brown thing I was like you know and I'm such a rabid NFL fan I've been a Vikings fan since kindergarten and Steve Jordan played a while ago but I was like he was tied in on a Minnesota Vikings you know late 80s I think and he was a very good player. At any rate it's interesting, just a little side note there. Well listen Joe I contacted you because you know we've been on the show before, but you know we've got some timely things going on right now with regard to potential change in the state law tax, the potential Biden administration etc, however I do think it's always important you know for many new listeners all the time on this show and it always helps to review some of the basic concepts so if you're okay with that, what I'd like to do is just kind of you know brush over some of the basics here. And so why don't you want to you know at a high level just say for example what exactly is estate planning? I mean I know it seems like such a basic question, but you know I'll tell you what, when I finished surgical residency and started making money for the first time, I had no idea what estate planning meant. So why don't you just start with a basic definition.
Joe: Well I always tell clients I say look when you're just coming up and just out of school you might be able to get away with it, single you might be able to get away with it, you're married and you have a joint tenancy on a house that's I call that a poor man's trust you might be able to get away with it, but once you have kids you need in my area of law you need your dose of medicine and what that is is a living trust. And a living trust is the entity that will hold all of your assets and it protects your loved ones, your wife, your children, your husband if anything ever happens to you and that really is the key document. Wills are also very helpful but in today's day and age it's the living trust is what you want.
Buck: So you know and this is just to expand on that point, a living trust is not that big of a deal right I mean listen people think oh trust whatever but it's a document that's ultimately you know it's not like it even has its own tax ID, it's just you know taking things out of your estate and to and basically putting it in this trust. Tell us why that is important.
Joe: You know under the law a living trust is looked upon as a contract, a customized contract by you on where all your assets go when you pass. So the law recognizes what you want and therefore you avoid probate and all the costs and fees that are associated with it your family I should say avoids probate and things transfer much more smoothly under the law and then your loved ones are ultimately able to mourn your passing and the assets transfer smoothly and ultimately your state's resolved in a much quicker more efficient manner as opposed the complexities that are involved in probate court.
Buck: And that's exactly the point I was trying to emphasize here and I tell people all the time, the living trust is not burdensome at all but what it does do is in the event that you die, which you will eventually, it allows your assets not to go through probate. Now for people who don't know what probate is, what is probate and how painful can probate be? I mean it's a very leading question but I think this is something that a lot of people just have no clue about.
Joe: Well probate is the court overseeing your estate now and it doesn't matter that you were married to the decedent it doesn't matter that you're the child of a decedent the court is in charge and that becomes very cumbersome when you can't access any of your father's account because the court's overseeing it and if you do access the account you owe the court in accounting and the attorney's fees are great and then in California and most of the seven southern California counties where I practice, the wait time for a simple probate that has no objections whatsoever right now is running about a year and a half to two years. For me to run assets through a probate it takes me about a year and a half to two years to get those through into the heirs or the children or whoever I'm getting it through the attorney's fees are very expensive, it runs about you know around two percent and up of the gross value of what you run so just take a a regular million dollar home. Your attorney's fees for pushing around paper for a year and a half to here is going to be about 20,000 there's core costs there's an appraisal involved I mean a simple living trusts are running anywhere from three to six thousand dollars in most cases and that includes all the health care directives and everything else so you understand just the fees alone are burdensome on your loved ones and most people in my practice once you explain them what a living trust is, how it helps your loved ones, most people are willing to invest in getting their estate plans set up and not and being taken care of you know.
Buck: That's right and the thing here to emphasize is and it's not just California. Of course you know everybody thinks California is slow and clunky with everything they might be right but this is probate is an issue in every state to a certain degree so imagine this if you are you know you've got a wife or a husband or whatever and you've got a few kids and you've got a 5 million dollar net worth and you know you have a bunch of stuff that's in your name right it's in your name and all of a sudden you die. And in California your assets don't go you know they're I mean in any state they're not going to go directly to your kids just because that makes sense, it's not going to happen. So your assets are going to be hung up at minimum in California two years and in other states it's you know it's not going to be any shorter than six months to a year right. And then it's going to cost you a bunch of money. Imagine that your family is going through you know this pain of losing you and all of a sudden they don't have any money. It's crazy so this is exactly why Joe saying the living trust is basic and fundamental. Did I see anything wrong there?
Joe: o your analysis is exactly right and like I said it it helps your loved ones with the transition.
Buck: So now this is the next the next issue I want to bring up here is that now once you get your living trust, use it right. This is something that's again something that I see all the time I've got a will I've got a living trust but I'm investing in my personal name I own my assets my investments through my personal name I own my LLC's that you know I'm deploying capital through or have holding companies and they're owned by personal names so all of those things then should actually be owned by a living trust is that correct?
Joe: That is the number one problem I see in just over 30 years of practice is people do a trust and then they don't bother putting things in it and we call that funding the trust. So let's make this clear it's not what you list in the back of the trust in schedule a that's not in the trust just because it's attached, it's the title of the asset being in the name of the trust is what makes it in the trust and that's the biggest problem I see is people who do the do-it-yourself trust through those companies or maybe just a you know didn't get it done correctly or gathered a bunch of assets after they did the trust and didn't bother you know remembering that they were supposed to put in the name of the trust. I tell the clients the children usually of the clients look your father you know did a good job by making a trust the bad news is I gotta go probate these two homes or these two pieces of real estate because they're in his name not the name of the trust.
Buck: It's funny because again it's one of these things that it sounds like this is not sexy stuff but this is critically important stuff right I mean this is critically important. You know when I have an LLC and now it's a little different because most are owned by you know different types of trust which we'll get into in a minute but you got to go back and look at your LLC's to make sure again just because it's an LLC does not then preclude it from being part of probate. If you have an LLC with assets or investments etc it again has to flow into that living trust to avoid probate. So okay and by the way again just to emphasize it's so easy once you get the document you know I just bought a couple cars this year and you know I was like well where should I title these? Well I just put it in a living trust and you know big deal I use my social security number for anything that information it's not even like there's a different tax ID it's just you know it just avoids probate. So it's that simple okay. So now we wanted to make sure we hit that stuff to begin with because I always feel like you know get the basics get the basics if nothing else you didn't know that now you know that that was the price of entrance for this podcast. So there's another level though Joe as we so to speak as we start getting we start getting trusts involved right and other types of estate planning that's more sophisticated. So from my understanding that's when you start get concerned about you know as you're when your net worth is going up when you're when you're starting to accumulate assets so that's when these issues come up potentially where you start thinking about estate taxes. Now most people even in my group so my investor club etc really didn't need to worry too much about that kind of stuff because you know they really didn't kick in these you know state taxes until like if it was a couple maybe 20 million plus range in net worth and you know most of our people are still probably below below 10 million and so it didn't really affect them but something's happening now that that could really change all that and it and it could be the case that it affects most of the people in for example in our investor club or accredited investors and that is the change in when these estate taxes start kicking in. Can you talk about the what you know sort of the buzz is in the in this space right now?
Joe: So yeah it kind of reminds me of 2012 at the end of 2012 we were going through a similar situation but the change the potential change of administration and Biden is the issue and Biden has come out and said that he doesn't like Trump's tax laws but what we don't know is we don't know exactly what he's going to do and remember he'd have to carry the both the congress and the senate if he's gonna change Trump's tax laws but he has said that he wants to change his laws. In my circles I'm hearing a lot of that he wants to bring the death tax exemption per person down to three and a half million just to give you an idea it's currently 11.58 million.
Buck: Per person so that's where we get the 20 plus we were talking about before
Joe: You can double that for a married couple okay. There's a lot out there that says he wants to bring it down to three and a half million. In fact I believe that we will probably end up in a obama era type a tax exempt estate tax exemption of between five and six million but what does that mean anyway
Buck: What does that mean and then and then how much you know how onerous is this tax
Joe: Context here so you're married you pass your wife inherits tax for everything okay that's called the unlimited marital exemption okay so spouses don't get taxed. But when the second the spouse goes the heirs which are you know 90 times children are to pay a death tax within nine months of that death and what is that? Well right now it's 40 on every dollar above 11.58 million okay. If Biden were to bring that down to three and a half million then it's and I don't know if it's 40 or 50 I mean I remember Bernie Sanders campaigning at one million dollar death tax exemption at 55 on every okay but what that would mean is our debt tax exemption is going to come down much lower than it is now so a lot of particularly real estate heavy families are coming to me and saying hey is there anything I can do between now and December 31st because because if one gets it takes office I think it's January 20th or whatever if he gets anything passed in 2021 it will be may retroactive to January 1st of 2021. So we all have between now and December 31st to examine our estate plans and see if there's any opportunity to move some assets to our children now to avoid death tax when we pass and now how do we do that? There's some very sophisticated ways to do it but the simple way to do it is gift your children now some of your assets okay so that they are don't count against the either 11.5 million or the possible pinning three and a half million okay. So do you understand if you get it out of your state now it can grow estate tax-free during your lifetime and then when you pass you avoid the estate tax.
Buck: So and this this is where it gets interesting because when what you just said I think makes a lot of people think the same thing. Well I'm not that old I don't really want to start you know giving my money away and not having control of it or not being able to enjoy it and all that but in fact that's not really necessarily what you're doing right you're not completely giving away control and there is still some ways in which you can still benefit from you know that money is that is that reasonable?
Joe: Yeah exactly let me give you a simple example okay let's just assume you have five million or let's just use 10 million dollars in real estate let's just say it's all in one LLC for simplicity purposes. You currently own 100 of that 10 million real estate LLC. How about gifting 30 which is a minority share to your two children 15 each? Well you still retain control okay you still get all the benefits of being in control of that LLC but you've now moved three million dollars out of your estate to your two children who are minority owners now of of your LLC and let's say you are relatively young and you hold that LLC for another 20 years and that thing appreciates just from 10 million dollars to 20 million dollars and then you pass well you just gave your children six million dollars tax-free, there's going to be no estate tax and that becomes valuable over time and you haven't given up any of your incidences of control.
Buck: I want to talk about something specifically that you know just in terms of my own planning I do have and maybe could be useful to actually a number of people in this audience because you know some are similar to me. But the way I'm set up and maybe you could kind of explain to people what this is because I know you do this as well is that I have set up a Nevada Dynasty Trust and the Nevada Dynasty Trust has the the owners of that trust are basically my my three daughters their irrevocable trusts so it's been decanted into there right now that that's how I have it set up. Now the Nevada Dynasty trust itself holds has a holding company and that's really where I'm the manager and what that allows me to do is is basically to you know invest that money if the kids need you know if we need to buy a house, well the kids need to live there so that's fair game right we can we can use that. Can you talk a little bit about that I don't want to be the lawyer who explains this but I find it to be a very useful structure and I'd like maybe you could explain that and see if you know to see if people think it might be useful for them.
Joe: Dynasty trusts are very helpful for our children for a number of reasons. When I was talking about gifting our children, we typically don't recommend gifting to children directly. We'd rather gift into a trust okay. And why would we want to use something like a dynasty trust that lasts the lifetime of your child? Well a few reasons. One is it's asset protected for your child so for instance when your daughter has this real estate and cash inside her dynasty trust, the future ex-husband's not going to be able to get into there. Future creditors on her bad business dealings or her malpractice claim or whatever it is she's exposed to predator-wise in life will not be able to get into that dynasty okay and so the assets are safe inside there they grow estate tax free inside there there's some other lifetime tax benefits having it a Nevada but we do recommend gifting assets out of your estate in an effort to avoid escape tax into some kind of a trust and that dynasty trust is probably you know the most common trust we use.
Buck: Let me ask you about the nature of things you can transfer into a dynasty trust. You mentioned real estate. Can you transfer operating businesses into a dynasty trust?
Joe: You can transfer anything into the dynasty trust. We just have to have it appraised so we know the value in the event of an audit we needed to have the value appraised at the time they were transferring it.
Buck: How about this, another question and I'm asking some of these questions because they're relevant to me so I'm you know I'm basically getting this legal advice for free but how about starting businesses that are owned from day one by the dynasty trust they have no value to begin with, can you do that?
Joe: I one time a very there's a very famous estate planning story that and it's out there that Mr. Hughes the founder of PS Public Storage I think he founded in 1981 and he made he he started he already was pretty independently wealthy but he started the storage business and he gave his two children who I think were in college at this time I can't remember the story but anyways he gave his two children into trust fifty percent of PS Public Storage which those interests are now worth billions of dollars okay when he passes and he's still around, I think he's of course just won the Kentucky Derby but when he passes his kids will not pay any estate tax on that 50 percent share of the PS Public Storage.
Buck: So the answer is yes you could have an active business that is starting you know from day one that has no value because it's a startup and you could have membership and grow it into you know a big pile of money basically right?
Joe: That's correct and it'll avoid estate tax.
Buck: That folks is really critical when you start thinking about some of your investments and so Joe correct me if I'm wrong okay on this because there are situations where you are you know you may be thinking about doing something for the first time and you know maybe you're already over that threshold of where the estate tax might be, you might consider starting, you can still in this situation I know at least in my diagnostic trust I'm the manager of the LLC's that owns you know the the LLC's owned by the dynasty trust. Now I actually I don't use that to go out to dinner and stuff for our vacations, but I can buy real estate because that real estate is ultimately owned by my children right, I can buy you know a home with that because that's where they're going to live and it's their home they own it right?
Joe: And as manager you have 100% control.
Buck: Exactly so I emphasize that because I literally have had conversations with friends of mine who have you know I've said you know you got to do something with your estate planning and I got to tell you Joe I don't know if you come across this all the time but you have very sophisticated people very entrepreneurial types business types who for some reason and I think maybe a psychological thing where you're just you know worried about you know giving everything away I'm not ready to give everything away and I'm not you know I'm not thinking about dying because I'm well I'm you know a pretty young guy but they just when the the idea of the word gifting comes up it conjures up these images of sort of you know giving it all away calling it a day that kind of thing and it's just not the case right?
Joe: No and I get that a lot like when the first reaction to sort of you know especially high now with people giving to their children and especially if their children are young you know the first reaction is the connotation of gift like you know and all of us want our children to you know do well in school get good jobs and work hard right, this is a different kind of gifting program this gifting program is into a trust for their benefit and the trust could either say hey you can only distribute for needs until let's say age 30 for instance, like housing medical or it could be a dynasty trust where it could serve their needs for their lifetime you could even name them as co-trustee at some point so they have access to the principal, who knows maybe you're one of your daughters want to work wants to work in the real estate business with you you know and she she can help guide your your job as manager. It's one of those things where it's a program to help you take some of your hard-earned assets and pass them down to your children tax-free. And right now we're in a climate where if the administration change happens, that estate tax is coming down not just a little bit probably dramatically okay. In fact in California there's rumblings about California having its own state tax in addition to that federal tax I just talked about. So your own states might have an additional estate tax you really need to understand if your state has your the state you're residing in has an estate tax and then keep an eye on the federal estate tax but either way this is an opportune time to look at the law and your own estate plan between now and the end of the year and see if there's something appropriate for your children. By the way I have a seven and a ten-year-old who both have these dynasty trusts that I gift into they have no idea what they have okay but my plan is to you know hopefully decades from now you know when I pass when they are responsible adults they have access to funds that will come to them tax free, won't be subject to the tax right.
Buck: Right a slightly different issue which I think again is important to a number of people in our space is you know there is a lot of talk about at least in the tax plan to remove you know the you know reset basis in real estate you know after death. Can you talk a little bit about what that is for people who might not be familiar and how that might affect them and how some of these things that we've talked about kind of feed into that.
Joe: Okay so where's where I begin in California I think we have three new tax propositions on the ballot. So as a lawyer looking and having read the propositions two of them I just think are poorly written. One being trying to get rid of the parent child exemption property tax exemption under the law. And what that means is in California right now let's just say your parents own a home your father dies your mother's living in her property tax basis is 4000 a year on this million-dollar home right. When she passes and you inherit the house you also can inherit a four thousand dollar property tax exemption that's called the parent child exemption okay. What they're trying to do is get rid of that okay. So that means and so I'm getting a lot of calls from parents or who are like should I transfer my home to my child now instead of when I die and the answer is you got to evaluate you're giving up and again this is another tax complex but maybe your real estate listeners will understand if you gift the home during your lifetime your child loses the step up and basis yeah okay but we'll get the property tax exemption so you got to do a math problem to see which one's more valuable.
Buck: But as I understand it Joe at the national level one of the potential things that could be eliminated and that's been talked about being eliminated is the step up in basis right and if that were to happen then it would be like there'd be basically no point I mean you you'd want everything in the trust right I mean there's no value in having outside the trust anymore.
Joe: You're absolutely right because if they do away the step up in basis upon the death of your parents you now have a that the date of death is the new valuation of the I mean you get your I'm sorry you inherit your parents basis so now you know if you go and sell the house you've got a capital gains tax that you well okay he's assuming most people most children that I represent that inherit the homes usually they end up selling them.
Buck: Yeah well and in that case you know they're it creates just a giant mess for real estate investors too because then presumably the they're they're not gonna the step up and basis whatever depreciation that that the parents took they're gonna end up paying recapture on the way out, recapture on the depreciation along with capital gains. So this is a gigantic mess and what I the moral of the story here is folks I think you really, really got to start thinking about this and it's not just for the 20 million plus crew anymore. This is something that you ought to be talking to Joe if you're in California. Joe you're you're you're licensed only in California and you you generally like to see people work with people in their own state when it comes to estate planning attorneys is that right?
Joe: Yes and that that is exactly because it's a state by state, state tax by state tax so you really need somebody in that state to give you proper advice both on the federal issues like the one you just mentioned that's up for debate and the state issues like the one I mentioned the propositions on the ballot in California.
Buck: Right so Joe if we're in California how do we get in touch with you?
Joe: I'm currently a partner at glazer while we have offices in century cities San Francisco and Newport Beach we're at glacierwild.com and you know you're welcome to I'm always happy to talk to clients over the phone and give and have the console over the phone these days to see where we're headed and I expect a lot of consulting going on between now between November 3rd and the end of the year.
Buck: By the way if you couldn't remember that just shoot me an email if you're in California [email protected] and I'll just forward it to Joe. People have done that in the past and I think that's a great way. What about for people who are not in California we have a nationwide and frankly, well we can't do anything for people outside of the country, but at least in this country how do you find a good estate planning attorney?
Joe: I'm a member of a nationwide group called the wealth council and it's wealthcounsel.com I have fined those lawyers to be top notch. I many times have to consult out-of-state lawyers for my clients because I have a client in California who has a piece of real estate Nevada or I need to set up a Nevada trust and I have yet to not find the very best quality lawyers and that and that grouping and if you on wealthcounsel.com there is a directory on there where you can go in and put in your city and state and then it'll give you a list of lawyers in your area
Buck: Fantastic. Well Joe I want to thank you so much for being on a Wealth Formula Podcast again and I would love to have you back again I guess once we kind of know definitively what's going on and we can kind of deal with the aftermath.
Joe: That's right. I'll see you November 4.
Buck: We'll be right back

2020.10.13 19:59 TheBishop7 The 2020 playoffs are approaching. Who should I root for? (4.5 Weeks Remain)

You may remember this weekly post from the last six seasons. This post is designed to give you an idea of who to root for in MLS matches not featuring The Black & Gold, yet including teams that still have an effect on The Crew's final standings.

Last (Half) Week

The Crew got some unexpected rest when their match in Orlando was postponed. Hopefully this allows just a little bit of recovery time for those on the injury list and those who are covering for them.
Toronto and Philadelphia kept their hot streaks going with all 3 points. They are both now convincingly at the top of the table. Portland also got their 3 points, positioning them just a point behind Columbus
The Black & Gold did finally get a little bit of support from their rivals as LAFC took down the streaking Seattle Sounders. NYCFC also dropped 3 home points to New England, who is now also making a dark horse run for themselves.

  • Toronto FC's win on Sunday clinched a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs. TFC are the first team in MLS to have done so. Link
  • Patrick Mullins' goal on Sunday was his first (regular season) goal since September of 2019, when he scored...you guessed it, away to Cincinnati. (Mullins did score in the MLS is Back Tournament round of 16 vs. NYC) Link
  • TFC will be without 'keeper Alex Bono for a little while. He dislocated a finger in training in the buildup to the Cincinnati match. The injury required surgery to repair, and according to the club the procedure went without issue. Hopefully the recovery is quick and full. Good luck Bones. His spot will be filled by Kevin Silva, who was the TFC2 'keeper in 2019. Link
  • Do the Red Bulls have a new threat? On Sunday morning the Red Bulls signed 17-year old Caden Clark to a first team contract. The Minnesota-native had been playing for Red Bulls 2 in the USL, but had his homegrown rights held by Minnesota United, even though the Loons have no active academy, and he never played for them. The Red Bulls traded $75k GAM for his rights, and immediately signed him to a MLS contract. In his debut later that day, the youngster scored the only goal in a 1-0 win away to Atlanta. Link

Last Week

Ugh. Not a great week.
Columbus lost their first home game against a recently struggling Montreal. Losing all 3 of our key additions in Lucas Zelarayán, Darlington Nagbe, and Vito Wormgoor has finally taken it's toll with the Crew now winless in 3 matches.
While Columbus dropped their points, their opponents in the East did not. Toronto won in New England to shoot into first, while Philly won at home to jump into second. Orlando held their own in Atlanta to move within one point of Columbus in fourth place. New York City also moved within striking distance of the Crew with their massacre of United. The top of the East has been ridiculously good since the end of the summer and this week has been the total encapsulation of that.

2020.10.09 03:22 TrentonMixLee A few brief questions from a prospective student

Background: I'm a prospective student from Texas planning to flee north to Minnesota next year.
I'm gay, so naturally I wonder about the state of the LGBTQ+ community on campus, especially a Lutheran school like St. Olaf (I attend a Church of Christ high school. I have a million horror stories. I won't tell them here.). I've heard St.Olaf/Northfield is generally liberal and accepting, but I was hoping to get a better picture of the LGBTQ+ scene on campus from anyone who might know. How is the dating life (specifically for that of gay men)? How are the on-campus clubs and events? Is homophobia a common, occasional, or nonexistent occurrence?
Also, for any native Minnesotans, how can a Texan best prepare for a midwestern winter? Is four-wheel-drive ever needed for cars? (I'll be driving to campus, not flying.)
Any input is appreciated. Thank you!

Yet again, a tale of two halves. The big takeaway is that Columbus earned a point on the road, but as has been the case for several weeks, a point does not stave off the chase for the Supporters' Shield.
Philadelphia was the only other team in the top 5 of the Shield standings to not walk away with 3 points as they lost to the in-form Toronto, 2-1. Orlando also continued their hot streak, as did Seattle.

2020.10.04 03:37 TheBishop7 The 2020 playoffs are approaching. Who should I root for? (6 Weeks Remain)

You may remember this weekly post from the last six seasons. This post is designed to give you an idea of who to root for in MLS matches not featuring The Black & Gold, yet including teams that still have an effect on The Crew's final standings.

Last Week

A tale of two halves. Unfortunately the better half didn't outweigh the worst half of the season for Columbus as they let in almost as many goals in 45 minutes as they had in the last 13 matches. The 3-1 loss in Toronto must result in lessons learned if Columbus wants to retain their Shield lead.
The rest of the league didn't do Columbus many favors. In the East, Orlando managed to salvage a draw in Dallas and Philadelphia won 3-0 at home. On the other side of the league, Seattle took down the Galaxy at home while Portland won 1-0 in Vancouver.

Disclaimer: I realize that cheering for the Fire or Toronto or whomever is not something you typically want to do, but remember that this is just statistics, and it is for the Crew's benefit for these results to happen. It also doesn't matter what you shout at your screen. What happens, happens, regardless of us. Root for the Mutiny, Fusion, or Chivas to win for all I care.

2020.09.28 17:10 Pbrisebois [Recap] MLS Matchday 14

MLS Matchday 14

Saturday 26 September

Nashville SC 1-1 Houston Dynamo
3:30pm Nissan Stadium Nashville, TN
Rios GOAL 49'
75' Yellow Card Lundkvist
81' Yellow Card Lemoine
89' GOAL Figueroa
Highlights
Man of the Match: Rios (1 Goal)
With the last-minute draw, Houston pulled itself into 9th in the Western Conference, within a point of Real Salt Lake and the playoffs. However, it's important to note that the competition has at least one game in hand, while the Galaxy, in 11th, have two games to make up. Meanwhile, Nashville remain in 9th, tied with Montreal Impact above the playoff line. Link

Highlights
Man of the Match: Mitritia (2 Goals)
This was more like it for NYCFC. After being shut out at the New England Revolution last Saturday and against Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday — while losing on a 90th-minute penalty despite outshooting the Reds 16-9 — the Cityzens were rolling on all cylinders against an ice-cold Cincinnati side that have scored just 2 goals in 9 matches. It was a rather straightforward performance for a side that are without Heber for the remainder of the season and saw Alexander Ring come off injured in the 1st half. Link

Sunday 27 September

DC United 0-2 New England Revolution
7:00pm Audi Field Washington, DC
45' Injury Polster

86' GOAL Bou
90' GOAL Buksa
90' Yellow Card Buksa
Highlights
Man of the Match: Bou (1 Goal)
D.C. are now winless in their last five matches. Stretch it back even further, and Ben Olsen’s group has just one win since play returned at the MLS is Back Tournament in mid-July. But make no mistake: This was a massive three points for New England. They have two straight wins to keep pace in the Eastern Conference and depart D.C. with a positive result for the second time this season. Link

Casseres No Goal via VAR 77'
90' RED CARD via VAR Binks
Highlights
Man of the Match: Barlow (2 Goals)
It’s the first winning streak of the season for the Red Bulls with matching 4-1 wins and the embattled club doubled their Red Bull Arena goal total on the night. Henry’s Impact actually had the lead, but once they conceded twice in the span of a minute early in the second half, it was clear an exhausted Montreal side would extend a season-long losing streak to four games. And it ended with another sending off, this time to Luis Binks for DOGSO following Video Review. Link
Philadelphia Union 3-0 Inter Miami
7:30pm Subaru Park Chester, PA
5' Yellow Card Reyes
Fontana GOAL 25'
Santos Yellow Card 46'
Ilsinho GOAL 69'
75' MISSED PK Higuain
Aaronson GOAL 90'
Highlights
Man of the Match: Przybylko (2 Assists)
In many ways, the Union did not control Sunday's match but were able to grind out the result anyway, continuing a strong run of form in the process. Miami will rue the scoring chances they missed, and not just Higuain's penalty that went well over the bar — they ended the match with only three of their 15 shots on goal. Link
Chicago Fire 2-0 Atlanta United
7:30pm Soldier Field Chicago, IL
Herbers GOAL 7'
Beric GOAL 39'
85' Yellow Card Adams
Highlights
Man of the Match: Shuttleworth (5 Saves)
Are the Fire catching, well, fire? After a stretch of five winless results, Raphael Wicky's side have won back-to-back matches, putting themselves just inside the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, for Atlanta, still missing Ezequiel Barco—along with Miles Robinson and Matheus Rossetto—it was a regressive showing after a much-needed 1-0 victory at home against FC Dallas on Wednesday. And their road woes continue, with its last win away from Mercedes-Benz Stadium coming in the season opener against Nashville SC back on February 29. Link
Toronto FC 3-1 Columbus Crew
7:30pm Rentschler Field East Hartford, CT
Altidore Yellow Card 28'
40' OWN GOAL Mavinga
Altidore GOAL 48'
Pozuelo GOAL 59'
60' Yellow Card Zelarayan
67' Yellow Card Morris
Laryea GOAL 76'
Highlights
Man of the Match: Laryea (1 Goal, 2 Assists)
TFC took well to its new temporary East Hartford home with the win, which leaves it just two points behind the Crew in a tightening East race that also involves the Union. Lo and behold, Toronto and Philadelphia meet next Saturday in which should be a huge contest with playoff implications. The Crew will be left doing a bit of head-scratching, appearing the better side in the first half only to hear "Brass Bonanza" three times in the second half. And, to borrow from pro wrestling, "That's the Hartford Whalers music they're playing!" Link
Minnesota United 0-0 Real Salt Lake
8:00pm Allianz Field St. Paul, MN
32' Yellow Card Ruiz
Metanire Yellow Card 37'
85' Yellow Card Glad
Highlights
Man of the Match: Putna (7 Saves)
This one was more entertaining than your average 0-0 draw, and both teams will be disappointed that they couldn't find the scoresheet with some better finishing. That might apply more to the Loons, who turned it up in the second half, and had the better of the chances for the latter part of the contest. With that in mind, RSL probably isn't complaining about getting out of it with a road point. Link
FC Dallas 0-0 Orlando City
8:30pm Toyota Stadium Frisco, TX
Ricaurte Yellow Card 48'
Jara Yellow Card 57'
64 Yellow Card Mendez
69' RED CARD Mendez
Santos Yellow Card 87'
90' Yellow Card Nani
Highlights
Man of the Match: Pereyra (No Yellow Cards)
Neither side are likely to be too unhappy with a point apiece after a game in which both teams showed why they began the game sitting in the top four in their conference. Dallas will feel they perhaps should have taken all three points at home and going up against 10 men for more than 20 minutes but they will also know that on another night Orlando could have snatched the victory themselves. Link
Colorado Rapids PPD Sporting Kansas City
9:00pm Dick's Sporting Goods Park Commerce City, CO
Postponed
Man of the Match: N/A
Major League Soccer announced today that the Colorado Rapids’ match against Sporting Kansas City originally scheduled for Sunday, September 27, at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park has been postponed to a later date.
The decision to postpone the match was made after the Rapids confirmed four positive COVID-19 cases on Friday—three staff members and one player. Link

Man of the Match: Mora (1 Goal)
Undefeated in four and winners of three straight, Portland are surging. Head coach Giovanni Savarese rotated his squad to great effect, too, letting key players get valuable rest. On the other hand, Vancouver dropped two straight this week. It was a better showing from head coach Marc Dos Santos’ group than Wednesday’s 6-1 loss at LAFC, but still a tough setback. Link

Man of the Match: Marcinkowski (6 Saves)
The loss drops LAFC to 7th in the West standings, and brings up some very real concerns about the offense. Rodriguez, in particular, looked primed to score a goal, but he met with some tenacious D on the San Jose side. While the Quakes are still last in the West, tonight showed how the Quakes are capable of playing. Now it's just a matter of how often they can do it. Link

Man of the Match: Roldan (2 Goals)
Coming off a disappointing road loss to the Portland Timbers, the Sounders got back on track in emphatic fashion, led by the duo of Morris and Roldan and aided by some questionable defending from the Galaxy. Aside from the loss to Portland, Seattle have been rolling since the league's restart following the MLS is Back Tournament, and these three points put them back atop the Western Conference table, where they're tied with the Timbers on 24 points. 2020.09.26 19:41 ZappaOMatic [OC] On this day 100 years ago, the first game involving an APFA/NFL team took place as the Rock Island Independents defeated the non-league St. Paul Ideals 48–0.

Last Thursday was the 100-year anniversary of the meeting between the representatives of ten teams that would ultimately form the National Football League. My write-up on that historic meeting turned out to be a massive hit, and I'm back with yet another centennial anniversary post. This time, we go from the car showroom to the football field.
100 years ago on September 26, 1920, a team took to the gridiron as a member of the NFL—then known as the American Professional Football Association—for the first time. While it was not a "true" league game as their opponent was not part of the APFA, it marked the start of something big.

The Rock Island Independents

Take a wild guess as to how the Rock Island Independents got their name.
For the first two decades of its existence, the Illinois-based team took on opponents regardless of league affiliation. Walter Flanigan joined the Independents as a player in 1912 before taking over as manager three years later. As the team racked up wins, Flanigan wanted to take his club to a higher level, and he gained that opportunity in 1917 when he challenged the Minneapolis Marines, the self-proclaimed "North West Pro Champs", to a game on Rock Island's home turf. A team record 6,425 fans turned out for the game, though they would fall to the Marines 7–3 (a rematch resulted in a more lopsided defeat of 33–14).[1]
After being shipped off to serve in World War I, Flanigan returned to the football world by cobbling together a slate of local games (all of which were shutout wins for the Independents). In 1919, he set his eyes on the national championship.[1]
As discussed in the last post, there was no "true" national champion as there was no national sanctioning body at the time. A team could win every game in their regional league and declare themselves the national champs without much objection, and that was what many teams did. Since the Independents were, well, independent, Flanigan had another idea to pursue the national title: take on league teams.
To do this, he recruited Minneapolis star quarterback Rube Ursella to his side, and a variety of Marines including local fullback Jerry Mansfield also joined the Independents. However, Flanigan's recruiting may have been too successful as a laundry list of interested players showed up; to weed out the scrubs, he organized a series of foot races and wrestling matches in which the losers were kicked off the team. Once he had a suitable roster, he got to work.[1]
The 1919 Independents would face a challenging slate against the top teams from Ohio and Indiana, including future NFL franchises Columbus Panhandles and Akron Indians. With the exception of a 12–7 defeat at the hands of the Hammond All-Stars, a team that featured an end by the name of George Halas, and a scoreless tie against a decorated Pine Village team, Rock Island would shut out every opponent.[1]

The Bulldog "Beef"

At season's end, the Independents boasted a 9–1–1 record, but Flanigan had one last game on his mind: a date with the undefeated Canton Bulldogs for the national championship on December 7.[1]
Well, Canton star Jim Thorpe said his team had other plans. Like, that was basically what his answer was.
On November 30, Ralph Hay, leader of the Bulldogs, sent a telegram to Flanigan asking what the Independents would offer in exchange for playing the game. A Rock Island fan had attended Canton's win over Hammond the previous week and was promised by the Bulldogs manager that he would consider a game against the Bulldogs as long as the Massillon Tigers beat the Cleveland Tigers (since Massillon had lost to Canton twice earlier in the season).[2]
Massillon won and Hay kept his promise by reaching out to Flanigan, who offered him $5,000 or 45% of the ticket sales. Both numbers had been demanded by Thorpe earlier in the year.[2]
The following evening, Hay called Flanigan and asked for the score of the Rock Island game against Akron. He provided the answer (a 17–0 Independents win), but expressed confusion as to why that was so important for Hay. Hay then told Flanigan to talk to Thorpe before he could agree whether or not to play the game.[2]
An hour and 17 minutes later, Flanigan received a telegram from Thorpe: "Have disbanded team. Cannot meet Rock Island."[2]
Kind of a lame excuse, but it's likely Thorpe also turned it down as the Rock Island/Akron game had only attracted 1,700 fans.[1] Flanigan attempted to reach out to Canton once again with by bumping the offer to $7,000 guaranteed or 50% of the gate.[3] Calls to Hay went unanswered, while one telegram to Thorpe read:[2]
We are offering your team the largest guarantee that it has ever received before, $5,000 or a privilege of 50 per cent for the gate. If you don't accept Rock Island fans will say you are quitters. Wire me your answer."
Thorpe's answer? No. One final call to Thorpe redirected Flanigan to an operator who told him that the Bulldogs player was sick and could not answer.[2]
True to Flanigan's threat, Independents fans and media were quick to brand the Bulldogs as cowards. The Rock Island Argus, a very [2]
Is Canton's famed Bulldogs afraid to risk their title of world's football champions by coming to Rock Island Sunday?
By arranging things in order and arriving at a logical conclusion, there can be but one answer. And that is "yes."
A fan letter to the Argus sports editor:[4]
Dear Sir: Being a real football fan I am like a great many more, disappointed because the Canton Bulldogs have a bad case of yellow. Now I think it would be a nice thing for everyone that has tickets to keep them and give the money which has been paid for admissions to the game, to the team for the splendid showing which they have made.
If anyone does not like the idea let them go and cash up. It seems to me that there would be a very few who would ask for their money back. It would also encourage the boys to come back next fall.
From P. G. M.
A Real Fan
Flanigan wrote to The Daily Times in Davenport:[3]
The Canton game is all off. I offered Hays $7,000 in an attempt to land the game but failed. They did not believe that we defeated Akron until they confirmed, report from Indians direct. It is merely a case of cold, cold feet and a streak of yellow.
Since the Bulldogs weren't going to play the Independents, they automatically declared themselves the national champions.[1] However, the Bulldogs also considered themselves the champs due to their undefeated record.[3]
Yeah, pro football is going to need somebody to settle controversies like this. Maybe a national football league?

Joining the APFA

Although his opinion of the Canton Bulldogs may have soured after their failed championship game, Flanigan was eager to work with Thorpe again.
On September 16, 1920, he boarded a train for Canton, Ohio to participate in a meeting of the top pro football team managers and owners.
"Manager Walter Flanigan left last night for Canton, Ohio, to attend the annual conference of major professional football teams, whose representatives assemble every year to plan the campaign for the world's championship," wrote The Rock Island Argus.[5]
The meeting took place at Hay's car dealership, but the details of that can be found in the last post. Flanigan would be appointed to a three-man committee to write the new league's constitution, joined by Carl Storck of the Dayton Triangles and Stanley Cofall of the Cleveland Tigers.[6]
Upon adjournment, the American Professional Football Association was born. We now have a national football league.

St. Paul Ideals

While the Marines dominated the Minnesota football scene, the St. Paul Ideal Athletic Club was not exactly a juggernaut by comparison, but they were no slouch either. An amateur team, the Ideals entered the 1919 season with the claim that they had lost only thrice since 1914.
In the amateur football section of The Minneapolis Morning Tribune's September 11 issue:[7]
A challenge to Minneapolis fotoball teams has been issued by the Ideals of St. Paul. The Ideals are disirous of booking games with a number of Minneapolis teams, especially the Indians and the East Ends. The St. Paul aggregation claims a record of having been defeated only three times in the last five years. Games already have been arranged with the Billows, Seatons, Hook 'Em Cows and Nicolius. All communications should be addressed to C. R. Woesner, 325 Daly street, St. Paul.
The Marines took up the Ideals' challenge. And promptly walloped them 36–0. Three weeks later, the Ideals tied the Minneapolis Eagles in a scoreless game.[8]
How did they do the rest of the year? I honestly do not know. Media coverage of the Ideals was virtually nonexistent, or at least incredibly difficult to find online. The Pro Football Archives schedule only lists those two games plus two others with no scores, while searches on Newspapers.com and other sites have been mostly fruitless.
Eh, whatever.

Game Day

Build-Up

Rock Island's Douglas Park played host to the Independents' 1920 season opener against the Ideals. Although Rock Island was considered the favorite and was returning its entire starting lineup from the previous year, Flanigan and Ursella were not going to let their guard down.[9]
"A defeat at this time would injure the box office to a big extent besides putting a huge crimp in the chances for a championship team," wrote Frank Weir of The Daily Times.[9]
In the week leading up to kickoff, Ursella ran his team through three-hour practices that included installing new offensive formations and audibles.[10]
The Davenport Democrat and Leader on September 24:[11]
Fearing over-confidence might play a prominent part in Sunday's battle with the St. Paul's Ideals, Coach Ursella last night wired for Chicken, star halfback, and Bob Marshall to report for work at once. Both men will be on hand for tonight's drill at Douglas park. [...]
From all indications Sunday's argument is going to be a heated one. Flanigan at first figured that the St. Paul aggregation would offer only enough resistance to afford his team a good workout but according to the dope which is coming from St. Paul the Ideals are a stronger aggregation than early reports indicated.
Fearing a surprise, Flanigan notified Ursella to get Marshall and Chicken in harness at once.
The Davenport Democrat and Leader on the morning of the game:[12]
Hardened by two weeks' gruelling practice, Rock Island's crack professional football eleven is ready today to open what promises to be the most successful grid season in the history of the professional game in the Tri-City. The St. Paul Ideals, a team of reputation, will offer the opposition and in spite of the fact that this afternoon's contest will be the initial performance for both elevens a bitter struggle is looked for. The game will be played at Douglas park and will be started promptly at 3 o'clock.
The Islanders will enter the fray in he pink of condition, to use the old ring adage. For two weeks Coach Ursella had drilled his team in signals and formations, sprinkling in a few spirited scrimmages between the regulars and second string men. The result is that the Independents will start the season in form that would become an eleven in mis-season condition.
[...]
Saturday the entire city of Rock Island talked football and no doubt football will be talked by the natives of Rock Island for breakfast, dinner and supper today. The city is football crazy.
Today's crowd, no doubt, will be swelled by hundreds of Davenporters whose interest in the Independents is just as keen as the interest of the Rock Island fans. Moline also will undoubtedly send a huge delegation to the game.
Fear Over Confidence
While Coach Ursella is confident that his team is far superior to the St. Paul aggregation, he expressed fear of over-confidence in speaking of the opening clash Saturday.
"The Ideals have played good football for the past three years" stated Ursella, "and I don't believe some of the men are taking the contest seriously enough. I don't want a surprise sprung in this game. I believe I can make the fellows realize they are meeting a tough aggregation, however, before they start in the game."
Bruce Copeland of The Rock Island Argus:[13]
There, football fans, is the first recipe of the season waiting for the expert cuisine of the Douglas park melting pot from which Rock Island hopes will trickle the championship brew at the close of the most eventful football campaign in tri-city history.
Championship dreams of months' duration will first be realized when hundreds of pent-up football enthusiasts from miles around meet tomorrow afternoon at Douglas park and see the green and white jerseyed warriors jog on the field for the first game of the season against the doughty Ideal A. C. of St. Paul.
The game will open a door to a new epoch in tri-city athletics after years of consistent achievements and good sportsmanship. Beyond the portal will be found Championship Way, along which the Independents of 1920 will course; and there isn't a fan in Rock Island who has the slightest doubt that their advance will lead right up to the shrine at the end in which the titular fires are burning.
Tickets were $1.65 plus tax, though attendance was hampered by the weather. After 7,000 fans were expected, only 800 showed up.[13][14]
"As Rube Ursella says, 'Let's go!'"[13]

First Half

As rain fell on Douglas Park, the game began with the Independents winning the coin toss and electing to receive. Left end "Oke" Smith returned the opening kickoff ten yards to his team's 25.[14]
The first offensive play from scrimmage was a nine-yard gain by Mansfield, followed by a 20-yard run by Ursella. A few runs later, halfback Eddie Novak found a hole set up by left tackle Dewey Lyle and scored on a ten-yard run for the first points of the day, capping off a four-minute, 11-play drive.[14]
Although St. Paul's left end Maidl Pavleck returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to midfield, his team's opening possession ended after just one play when halfback Cunningham Mikesh lost a fumble that Freeman Fitzgerald recovered. Mansfield broke free and reached the Ideals' 15, and a 12-yard run by Novak set the Independents up at the three. Two plays later, halfback Fred Chicken scored.[14]
The Ideals' next series ended with a three-and-out. After a five-yard run by Mansfield, Ursella completed the first forward pass of the season with a 22-yard throw to Smith to reach St. Paul's 18. By the end of the first quarter, Rock Island was in scoring range at the two-yard line. A play later, Novak punched it in for six.[14]
Down by three scores, St. Paul began to see life when quarterback Parr A. Pahl found E. Dixon O'Brien for a "brilliant forward pass" that went 40 yards. That was ultimately the only good play of the drive as Pahl tried an onside kick (before 1923, the onside kick was legal on scrimmage plays) that Chicken recovered. Both teams exchanged punts shortly after.[14]
Following St. Paul's punt, Chicken's grip on the wet ball slipped, but Mansfield recovered and gained 15 yards before being taken down. A 28-yard run by Chicken placed Rock Island at St. Paul's 38, followed by a 12-yard gain by Paddy Quinn. Three plays later, Mansfield scored again on an 18-yard run.[14]
A 52-yard run by Mikesh put the Ideals in Independents territory, but they could not capitalize as time ran out.[14]

Second Half

After some substitutions, the game resumed with Rock Island kicking off.[14]
A fake punt by Pahl into a lateral to Mikesh on the first play gained three yards. The two attempted a double pass a few plays later, though Mikesh slipped on the mud and fell. As the offense grinded its way into Rock Island's side of the field, yet another double pass placed Mikesh with a lot of open field... until he slipped again.[14]
All offensive progress was ultimately stopped when Pahl was intercepted by Waddy Kuehl, who returned it 82 yards for a pick six.[14]
Mikesh was downed for a 12-yard loss to begin the Ideals' next play from scrimmage, pinning his team at their own eight. Facing immense pressure on the ensuing punt, Pahl dodged the blitz before delivering a quick kick to the St. Paul 32. A 12-yard run by Sid Nichols allowed Rock Island to enter the red zone, where they pounded their way to the end zone yet again on a five-yard run by Mansfield.[14]
The offensive woes continued for the Ideals when Pavleck's pass on a fake punt led to him getting sacked (which was not a term at the time) for 13 yards. Pahl was the next to try a throw, this time succeeding on a 21-yard completion to Pavleck. Mikesh was tackled for an eight-yard loss to end the third quarter.[14]
Down by 42, the Ideals began placing heavy emphasis on feeding Mikesh the ball. St. Paul found themselves in position to score their first points of the game on a drop kick by Pahl from the Rock Island 45, but it was well short and sailed wide left, being caught by Kuehl at his 13.[14]
Nichols let the ball slip through his hands on the next play before Fitzgerald recovered. The Independents' march would see two 22-yard runs, another fumble recover, and an awkward TD score as Kuehl slipped as he crossed the goal line. Nichols missed the extra point.[14]
The final drive of the game saw the Ideals lose a combined 15 yards. Final score: Rock Island 48, St. Paul 0.[14]
The Independents recorded 427 yards on 45 total plays, while the Ideals had just 85 on 52. Rock Island also outgained St. Paul in first downs (17 to five).[14]

Post-Game

Despite the shutout, Weir praised the Ideals, writing in his post-game report that they "displayed a lot more class than this score indicates. The visiting team fought doggedly through the entire four quarters and pulled plays at a surprise nature at intervals that netted long gains. [...]
"The Ideals have a smooth working football team and one that against a less formidable opponent would show some excellent results."[15]
The Davenport Democrat and Leader:[16]
The Independents showed a world of power and lots of spots where sandpaper can be applied profitably. Their offensive was all that could be desired, but the defense was far from perfect. Time and again the visitors would carry the ball to the Rock Island 40-yard line with end runs and line plunges, but that was their high water mark.
None of the Islanders deserve especial citation, all played their part well. Keuhl, Novak and Ursella were extremely clever at eluding the ends, while Novak was always good for four yards thru the line.
Mikesch, St. Paul left halfback, showed a world of speed and pulled off several dazzling end runs thru the entire Islander team. Twice he was stopped on the uncomfortable side of mid-field with only Ursella between him and the two little uprights. Pahl and Pavlick also showed class. Les than 2000 bugs were in attendance.
Copeland:[14]
The score does not indicate the class of the game from the standpoint of interest, for although the Ideals were vastly outplayed in almost every department of the game, they remained a dangerous vector throughout the game that threatened to flaunt the unexpected and thereby cross the Rock Island goal line.
There were several moments during the one-sided contest when breaths were baited from suspense when the Ideals rallied sporadically and cut loose with scoring stuff that was checked only by the most concentrated defense. The Ideals fought gamely to the end through the falling rain that would deter almost any team of such a light weight as the season's initial victims. Outweighed fully 10 pounds to the man, the Ideals made the Independents exert their best, hereby making it one of the best games to witness.
A few days after the game, Flanigan finally got what he wanted the previous year: a game against Jim Thorpe and the Canton Bulldogs, scheduled for November 21.[17]
Well, until everyone on the Independents started getting hurt during the season (including a particularly ugly game in early November against George Halas' Decatur Staleys), leading to its postponement to November 28.[18] The game was ultimately called off as Thorpe felt it was not financially practical, despite Flanigan still being able to provide the $5,000 guarantee.[19]
Flanigan and Rock Island would never play against Thorpe during their time in the NFL. However, in an ironic twist, Thorpe would join the Independents for the 1924 season. The team folded after 1927.[1]

2020.09.25 22:03 TheBishop7 The 2020 playoffs are approaching. Who should I root for? (6.5 Weeks Remain)

You may remember this weekly post from the last six seasons. This post is designed to give you an idea of who to root for in MLS matches not featuring The Black & Gold, yet including teams that still have an effect on The Crew's final standings.
The last time I wrote this post, it was me effectively giving up on the season and the idea of sneaking into the playoffs. Despite a late season surge from a finally heathy (healthier?) roster, the Crew ended up near the bottom of the table.
We are in stark contrast as Columbus has a commanding lead over not just the playoff line, but the entire league. As of today, we aren't so much concerned about the playoff race, but the race for the Supporters' Shield.

Last Week

The Crew had a very solid home stand against both newcomer Nashville SC and Minnesota United FC, winning both matches 2-0 and 2-1, respectively.
Philadelphia was the main team nipping at our heels, having won 5 of their last 6, but they only managed a draw in Cincinnati, so fell behind to 5 points behind Columbus.
Also 5 points behind Columbus now are Orlando and Toronto, who both won their tougher road matches and are still serious contenders for the Shield.
Contenders out of the Western Conference include Seattle, Portland, and Kansas City, though there are a number of other teams who still have the ability to make their mark.

2020.09.14 02:35 d49k Ghosts (Movie) MEGAPOST. Music, Videos, Links & Reviews. 1993 Is It Scary origins, Addams Family Values, false allegations, The Orchestral Score, 2 Bad, Is It Scary, Ghosts (Song), Morphine information, Commercial Release (Ad & Unboxing), 30 Remixes. Behind the scenes & concept art.

A couple of weeks ago, I read ‘Did I Scare You? How MJ altered the sensations of racism’. It’s a retrospective review of "GHOSTS" in which Michael's response to his critics is analysed. It’s a great read and very well informed, though I some of the comments it made I wasn’t so sure of. The review focused on Michael’s changing face, how he used it for art and it’s connections between Michael and racism. I don’t disagree with the article but I wanted to articulate for myself what I feel about the movie and put it out there.
GHOSTS is my favourite short film. Combined with HIStory: Past, Present & Future Book I, they are a set of artistic works which has been the most autobiographical of Michael's work. I wanted to share everything I know about it with links to behind the scenes, articles, music and information in one place. I wrote this to post on MichaelJackson, I’m not a professional writer or music critic, I’m just a fan so forgive me if my style is a bit messy. To my knowledge, Ghosts isn’t available on any streaming network and there’s no high-quality versions of Ghosts available online but this is the best I can find on YouTube, The sound is off and the picture is stretched from 4:3 to 16:9. Halloween is coming up soon and naturally we think about Thriller, Ghosts and few other tracks at this time of year. I can only hope the estate will at some point scan it to 4K and release it properly.
I can’t just write about Ghosts, “Is It Scary” and “2 Bad” are part of its DNA. Hell, the whole HIStory album should be included given what “Ghosts” is about, even “Morphine” could be included but this post is a biggie, so I won’t. The story of the feature film: “Michael Jackson’s Ghosts” is a far cry from the title of the movie and the track it lends its name from.
Is It Scary origins / Addams Family Values
In 1992 Paramount Pictures asked Michael to participate in the movie “Addams Family Values” they (and he) wanted a short film in the style of “Thriller” or “Smooth Criminal” as an insert (or independent short film) to help promote the Addams Family Values.
In 1992, Michael asked horror writer Stephen King to collaborate with him and Mick Garris (then director) to write a screenplay for the short film (with no title at this stage). The two wrote an outline of what eventually became GHOSTS and set on a title of “Is It Scary”. This was to indirectly match the Addams Family Values movie plot while also being autobiographical of Michael’s life. This is around the middle of the Dangerous tour between Tokyo in late 1992 and Bangkok in August 1993. The film was to depict local villagers attempting to exorcise a perceived villain or threat to the community, a theme which loosely runs through the Addams Family Values and prophesied what was to come in Michael’s personal life, after initial shooting began. More Info from AFI Catalog.
There’s a scene in Addams Family Values where Joel screams at a poster of Michael on the wall, another example of Michael being the punchline in jokes across the film industry and it’s a shame because they were using him originally to help promote the movie. More Info.
Filming for “Is It Scary” began in the first half of 1993 at the CBS/MTV studios in LA, the music scenes had not yet been filmed (The song, “Is It Scary” hadn’t been written yet) and Michael had to resume the Dangerous Tour. There are conflicting reports as to whether Michael was falsely accused during the shoot for “Is It Scary” or shortly afterwards when hr resumed the Dangerous tour, which he eventually cancelled.
The most obvious change between the versions are the Mayor. Ken Jenkins (Dr Bob Kelso from Scrubs).

Life Imitates Art
In response to tabloid and press speculation about Michael’s absence from the media and America, Michael Jackson’s lawyer, Bertram Fields released a statement included in this New York Times article in November 1993 stating that Michael was under treatment for addiction to painkillers and "was barely able to function adequately on an intellectual level" but added that this was just temporary.
Mr. Fields laid the blame for Michael’s addiction, in part, to "the rage, humiliation and embarrassment" over [the Jordy Chandler case]. He said it would be foolish to bring Mr. Jackson back to the United States now to help prepare a defines against the civil suit, or to be questioned by the child's lawyer, given Mr. Jackson's condition. This reddit thread from 8 months ago together with the Michael Jackson Allegations website and the Leaving Neverland Q&A episode of the MJCast go into the detail of the allegations.
Clearly, we can see that Michael has been hit hard. Midway through filming “Is It Scary” and performing the Dangerous concerts he is vilified by people who already have bias against him in a bizarre “life Imitates art” freak coincidence. It was during this time that the contract between Paramount and Michael was cancelled. Michael also cancelled the remaining dates of his Dangerous tour. News reports at the time were focused on his presumed guilt, the failure to his fans and the money he lost. I have only ever seen one article written at the time in support of Michael, written for GQ magazine in October 1994 8 months before HIStory was released. A copy is available here. Michael was understandably at an all-time low, I’ve never read anywhere that he got depressed but alas, he medicated himself using painkillers. I don’t blame him, do you?
Morphine
A Quick note about “Morphine”: It was written and produced exclusively by MJ. Michael was more hands on for this track and played percussion, drums and guitar along with all lead and backing vocals. This is Michael Jackson without other producers or arrangers influencing the track. “Morphine” was going to be the lead single from Blood on The Dance Floor but Sony decided on the title track from the album instead. (Later for Invincible, Sony disallowed Michael’s choice of lead single favouring You Rock My World instead of Unbreakable). It’s tragic that a lot of people have not even heard of “Morphine”, not only is it another great MJ Vs Slash rock track, it’s Michael at his most vulnerable, “Morphine” is a cry for help which ultimately went unnoticed and unanswered.
Repurposing “Is It Scary” for Ghosts
With the project for “Is It Scary” now scrapped; Michael was free to continue his work. Deciding to rework a cancelled compilation entitled Decade 1980-1990 (it was scrapped in favour of Dangerous) and incorporating new songs, the resulting album became HIStory: Past, Present & Future Book I. (I could write pages about the HIStory album, it’s one of the most iconic concept albums ever created, a musical autobiography and a work of genius by a genius)!
To focus again on “Ghosts”, we need to skip forward to late 1995 after the HIStory album was recorded was released. Michael took control over the “Is It Scary” project and decided to use “2 Bad” since the lyrics are coherent with the movies theme. It’s conceivable that Michael had this video in mind when he was writing “2 Bad” in 1994. Michael was producing this short film to promote the HIStory album, before embarking on the HIStory world tour.
It’s possible the movie may have been temporarily renamed to “2 Bad” given that’s the core song of the production and the ID tags for the cast and clapper boards during production feature “2 Bad” instead of “Is It Scary” or “Ghosts”. Sony asked Michael during the production of Ghosts (Movie) for a new album. That ultimately became Blood On The Dance Floor, the best selling remix album of all time.
Working with Stan Winston in early 1996, the original script changed, and Michael would play several incarnations of himself ‘demonised’, (Hello Thriller 1996)! as well as the antagonist, who happens to be the modelled on the same demographic as Tom Sneddon. This is just as coincidental as the name “Dom Stanton” is to Tom Sneddon ;)
Ghosts Orchestral Score
The dance routines were choreographed by Michael and LaVelle Smith and Timothy Earl Soloman to the original score of Ghosts by Nicolas Pike mixed with “2 Bad”. (Nicholas Pike at Discogs).
MJVibe Interviewed Nicolas Pike in 1995 about the orchestra for Ghosts in 2015. Available here.
2 Bad
The version of “2 Bad” which features on GHOSTS is reworked, funkier, groovier and it’s a hard hitting, aggressive, ‘fluff the dust off your shoulder’ dance routine is just as livid as it’s angry lyrics.
“2 Bad’s” lyrics deal with themes of alienation and judgement. the song confronts his accusers, his gritty voice raises its volume and declares “You’re disgustin’ me” This is in direct response to people who have harmed him, people who have extorted money from him. Michael is angry, probably more angry than he was in “Scream” but that anger beautifully expresses confidence in his ability to recover from people who have conspired against him in the past.
A few days ago, u/Starfire asked “What aspect of MJ's life are you abnormally obsessed with?” and I’d have to say how autobiographical he is in his music and his attitude, full of self-confidence with it, “2 Bad” for instance proclaims “too bad, you tried I won’t back down”.
The Run-DMC sample at the beginning is interesting and extremely important. Between the Bad and Dangerous albums, Michael invited Run-DMC to collaborate with him for a track called “Crack Kills”, they rudely declined. They even use semiotics in their music video for King of Rock to denounce Michael, symbolically stamping on Michael’s sequined glove from Billie Jean. They didn’t create this anti-Michael movement but they were following what was unfortunately becoming the mainstream opinion about Michael at the time, criticizing him for his looks and eccentricities instead of enjoying the work he did. It was the end of making fun out of Michael but it was the start of him becoming demonised by the press and ridiculed by the the public. Something which didn’t end until he announced his final curtain call, “This Is It”. (Run-DMC later regret never working with him).
So what did Michael do? Use the first lines of lyrics from King of Rock as the first lines in “2 Bad” an awesome ‘Fuck You song’ in its own right but in Ghosts, Michael plays himself and parodies of these demons he is falsely accused of.
Of all the lyrics within “2 Bad”, of all the lyrics in the HIStory album, of all the lyrics he has ever performed...
“I’m Standing Though You’re Kicking Me”
...is one of the most profoundly autobiographical, ironic and iconic statements across his music.
“2 Bad” was written by Michael, Dallas Austin, Bruce Swedien, René Moore, and Shaquille O’Neal (he wrote the Rap, Michael and Shaq knew each other casually). It was produced by Michael, Bruce Swedien, René Moore, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis at The Hit Factory in New York 1994. It was the third time Michael has collaborated with basketball stars (Michael Jordan on Jam and Magic Johnson on Remember The Time) proving once again that “♫ It Ain’t Too Ah-Much For Me To Jam!”.
After a gruelling dance routine, set to music which was modified on set so Michael could ‘feel it’ the song gives way to “Is It Scary”. (Similar music for this dance break is linked below).
Is It Scary
“Is It Scary” was written and recorded by Michael, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis between 1993/4 and recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Minnesota and Larrabee Studios, LA. Notably after the story for what became the Ghosts film. The lyrics for “Is It Scary” are based in part on the screenplay for Ghosts, Michael’s autobiographical story, an unwelcome eccentric man. The movie and song are symbiotic, considering the movie was conceptualised before the false allegations emerged and the song was finished afterwards, Michael sings “I'm gonna be exactly what you want to see, It's you who's haunting me” and “And if you want to see eccentricities, I'll be grotesque before your eyes. Let them all materialize! Is that scary for you”?
Michael is referencing himself as the victim, he is essentially saying “you will see what you want to see, you’ve already made up your mind”. It’s not the first time Michael has sung about himself as the victim. “They Don’t Care About Us” features the lines “Jew me, sue me, everybody do me. Kick me, kike me, don’t you black or white me”
On June 15, 1995, a day before the release of HIStory, The New York Times reported that "They Don't Care About Us" contained racist and anti-Semitic content. Michael responded directly stating:
"The idea that these lyrics could be deemed objectionable is extremely hurtful to me, and misleading. The song in fact is about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems. I am the voice of the accused and the attacked. I am the voice of everyone. I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the black man, I am the white man. I am not the one who was attacking. It is about the injustices to young people and how the system can wrongfully accuse them. I am angry and outraged that I could be so misinterpreted."
— Michael Jackson 1995.
Michael has sung about his oppressors and the press before, “Leave Me Alone” is cry for privacy, “Why You Wanna Trip On Me” questions why him and not society, “Scream” is about… (read this instead) and “Tabloid Junkie” (well, that one condemns us all doesn’t it)? “Is It Scary” turns the tables, an anthem just as powerful as Earth Song or Man In The Mirror. Michael Jackson, the philanthropist and humanitarian the boy who the world watch grow up and young fans are STILL finding excellence in his work two decades after his final album. A man who has given up time and money to help children all over the world, a man now signing for his own justice, a man literally screaming at the top of his voice “I'm tired of being abused, you know you're scaring me too, I see the evil is you!”
And what is there to fear? Absolutely nothing. In the movie, after this track we’re treated to some funky instrumentals, taken from “2 Bad” that would make even Prince gasp and yet another dance breakdown. Michael isn’t present during this one but he doesn’t need to be. It is SIGNATURE Michael Jackson.
At the end of this scene, Michael as the ghoul, inhabits the body of the Mayor and uses him, his image and humiliates him In front of the towns people which is exactly what has happened to Michael. The entire theme of this movie is about Michael being persecuted, not only by Tom Sneddon but the wider public at large. The most humiliating point for Michael by this time was the strip search by LAPD two years earlier in December 1993. Michael released a public statement two days after stating that “it was the most humiliating ordeal of my life”. Michael, as an extremely artistic but also playful in nature, teases his accuser by trolling him in a dance short, then shining a mirror right back at him asking “Who’s the freak now”?
Michael Jackson, a KING, takes a bow.
In the last few minutes of the movie, Michael asks the crowd if he should he stay or not? He’s won them over already, they can see his point, but the mayor is insistent, the freak doesn’t belong here. Michael gives him what he wants, a self-destructive blow to the floor, turning to dust. There’s a look of shock and horror on the town’s folk, maybe even regret that they misjudged him. Guilt perhaps that they were the ones to instigate what appears to be a suicide right in front of them.
In the original version from 1993, this scene has the kids attempt to put him back together again, in Ghosts, his (ashes?) are blown away. Saddened, the crowd start to leave, and the movie takes a quick twist from sadness to humour. Michael is well documented to be a practical joker and he instilled his personality yet again as Michael appears larger than life in the doorway of the exit. The mayor scared out of his wits runs for the window and jumps out, the music and shape of the break in the glass has a humorous theme. Michael asked at the start this confrontation, whoever gets scared first, must leave. Well my friends, Michael had the last laugh.
As the credits roll, we’re treated to around 5 minutes of behind the scenes footage featuring the makeup changes and CGI featured in the film. The title track begins and it’s a slightly different version from the remastered version for Blood on The Dance Floor.
Ghosts (song)
Michael and Teddy Riley wrote “Family Thing” together in 1993 for the Addams Family / Is It Scary movies but they stopped production when the “Is It Scary” movie was shelved. No longer tied to the movie, a new song was created.
“Ghosts” was written by Michael and Teddy at the Hit Factory, NY & Record Plant Studios and Ocean Way Recording between 1994-1997, it was also intended for inclusion on the HIStory album (It was replaced with “2 Bad” instead). There’s a 1996 version of Ghosts with constant bass running through the track while a remaster doesn’t include the extra bassline. (Links below). Some of the information I’ve read about Ghosts suggests that the chorus is a logical continuation to “Who Is It” but I can’t see that myself, can you?
Ghosts (Production Including Making Of)
Stan Winson (director) was recommended to Michael by Mick Garris, (the original director). Michael called Stan personally to ask if he might consider directing the film and Stan agreed with only one condition: that Michael would play all the lead roles.
“I wanted Michael to play the haunted house guy," said Winston, "but also the mayor of the town, and an evil demon who comes in at one point. Michael wanted badly to be accepted as an actor, as something more than the King of Pop. But it was so difficult for people to get past Michael’s persona, I thought that the only way he would be accepted as a real actor was if he played all these parts, disguised in makeup, so that no one would know it was him until the end. And he was very agreeable to that idea.” GHOSTS Behind The Scenes at Stan Winston School.
Artist Paul Mejias was the sculptor for the model work on Michael’s various costumes.
Concept Art for Michael pulling ‘his’ skin and smashing ‘his’ skull. From makeup artist Miles Tevas. (Apart from Michael’s music and dancing, the scenes where he’s disfiguring himself in Ghosts have got to be the best across this short film catalogue).
VH1 released a 20-minute documentary The Making of Michael Jackson’s Ghosts right before Halloween in October 2002. It features the making of, with behind the scenes material and the detail of some of the cinematic illusions behind the production as well as interviews with the cast and crew including Michael.
The next link contains rolling camera outtakes with audio from the final cut placed over the top to add context. It’s another peek inside the production of the movie.
In the next video, the motion capture for the ‘Skeleton Dance’ is documented.
Ghosts held the Guinness world record for the longest music video. (Pharrell Williams holds that now with his 24-hour music video “Happy”. (How did Jon Beattie shoot Pharrell’s “24 Hours of Happy”?)
Release
Ghosts was premiered for the first time at the 50th Cannes Film festival on 8th May, 1997. Here’s footage of Michael arriving for the premier.
In December 1997, at the end of promoting Blood on the Dance Floor, a Deluxe Collector Box Set of Ghosts was released. It featured a VHS of Ghosts, Blood on the Dance Floor album and “On The Line” Limited Edition Minimax CD. I bought the Deluxe Box Set myself on the day it came out from a Virgin Records Store. Sadly, I don’t it any more but it was awesome to hold a massive programme with great glossy photos. Here’s an Unboxing of the Deluxe Collector Set.

What if our school doesn’t have a Tespa ChapteEsports Club?

Being part of a Tespa Chapter or esports club is not required to compete in this tournament. As long as you and your teammates attend the same college and meet the eligibility requirements, you are more than welcome to sign up and get in on the action!

What if I am the only person at my school who plays HS?

We encourage everyone, even if you are not optimistic about finding a group of 3, to at least try the following:

2020.08.23 03:02 portlane Donald Wicher (Dec. 12, 1920 - Aug. 12, 2020)

Donald Willard Wicher
Dec. 12, 1920 - Aug. 12, 2020
Donald Willard Wicher, 99, died at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton, Ore., Aug. 12, 2020 from congestive heart failure. He was born in Portland, Ore., Dec. 12, 1920 to Donald and Edna Wicher. He had three older sisters, to whom he was always close.
Don lived in the Portland area most of his life. He graduated from Beaverton High School in 1937, at the age of 16, having skipped two grades. He later graduated from Northwestern School of Law in 1950, bypassing college by passing an entrance exam. He spent his career in banking, working as a tax and trust attorney for what is now Wells Fargo Bank. His banking career was interrupted by WWII, where he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946.
During his early years at the bank, he met his future wife, Mary, who worked for a rival bank. Unbeknownst to him, her uncle, with whom she lived, was his boss, which he discovered when he went to her house on their first date and her uncle opened the door. They were later married in a garden ceremony at her aunt and uncle's home in 1942 and remained married until Mary's death in 2011, shortly after their 69th wedding anniversary.
Don was a devoted father to his two children, Donna and Robert, attending endless piano recitals, ballet performances, baseball games, and driving the family station wagon on vacations to visit relatives in exotic destinations such as Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, and Saskatchewan. He even stayed up most of the night helping his daughter stuff envelopes with questionnaires for her doctoral dissertation. He was active in his community and spent 10 years on the school board of the Beaverton School District, where he served as Chairman of the Board the year his daughter graduated from high school, handing out the diplomas at her high school graduation and mildly embarrassing her by kissing her on the forehead in front of her peers as he presented her with her diploma.
Don and Mary loved to travel, especially after his retirement, not only throughout the United States and Mexico, but also to European countries such as England, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, and Germany. Highlights included family cruises to Tahiti, the Mediterranean, and the Panama Canal. After Don's retirement, they bought a home in Palm Springs and for many years, spent winters in Palm Springs and summers in Oregon. They made many friends and joined several groups, such as a movie club. They also enjoyed winter visits from family and friends in Oregon. They sold their Palm Springs home and returned to Oregon in 2007 after Mary's health declined.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; and his son, Robert (Molly); as well as sisters, Martha, Marguerite, and Genevieve. He is survived by his daughter, Donna (Brent); and many cousins, nephews and nieces, who all enjoyed his company and will miss him greatly. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

2020.08.16 03:46 jg429 Sub Survey Results!!

Thanks to everyone who filled out the survey! I was hoping to get some insight into what's bringing people here and how we can improve, and I think we mostly met that goal! You can go on a deep dive into the results below.
In general, people come here because of the sense of community and how nice everyone is. Ways we can improve: more engagement with each other and with the band (I lost count of how many people asked for Rian's AMA lol). The mods will work on what we want to do with some of these ideas and go from there.
81 people filled out the survey. Last year, we had 65 responses. I linked the results to the last survey, but I have not yet gone through to see what's similar and what's different.
Disclaimer #1: Some comments were lightly edited for clarify or spelling.
Disclaimer #2: Next time I think I want to do a survey, someone please remind me how much freaking work it is to put all the data together.
Disclaimer #3: My comments are in bold, as are the top selections for each category. I was a little sassy.
Reminder: There are controversial opinions about the band and normal song opinions. You're welcome to respond to anything but remember to be nice and respectful. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and mostly everyone is here because of how welcoming the community is.
