Indonesian State Formation and its Geostrategic Posture

I decide to write this piece because there is a lot of misperception and clichés about Indonesia in the media and even many think tanks. Often people remark that the country isn't cohesive and will balkanize. Many Australian observers have been saying this since the 1950s. This post will explain geographical and historical coherence of Indonesia.
First, Indonesia must be understood as a West-East Thalassocracy orientated around trade much like civilizations in Mediterranean. The trading concern transitioned into a plantation economy, and from this arose the plantation-settler state. The Indonesia's geostrategic drive even before it became independent was furthering the territorial expansion and exploitation (ie furthering the plantation system). Indonesia's foreign policy throughout much of its history involved advancing this form of nation building -- securing Indonesia's independence, recognition for Indonesia's "territorial expansion / consolidation"
The post will be organized as follows

Indonesia's geostrategic document is Wawasan Nusantara or ARCHIPELAGIC OUTLOOK. It states Indonesia's geography. the Indonesia's geographical challenges, and how to deal with them. Wawasan Nusantara is based on the Djuanda Declaration which recognized:
  • Indonesia is an archipelagic state made up thousands of islands
  • All the islands and the seas connecting these Island fall under Indonesia's national territory
  • Free peaceful navigation by foreign ships through these waters will be guaranteed, as long as they don't disrupt Indonesia's sovereignty.
The declaration was made formalized into law in 1960, and serves as the basis for Indonesia's archipelagic state concept submitted to the UN.
Over time, four main themes emerged out of this conception(1) an enduring concern over geographical location; (2) a suspicion toward extra-regional powers; (3) an aspiration for regional activism and leadership; and (4) a concern over national unity in the wake of fragmented geography.

Indonesia rest between Pacific and Indian Ocean, and between the Asian and Australian continents. As shown on the map there are four access points from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean that across Indonesia - Malacca Strait, Sunda Strait (ALKI I), Celebes-Lombok Strait (AKLIII), Banda Sea (ALKI--III)
According to a Rand Report published in 2013 Employing Land-Based Anti-Ship Missiles in the Western Pacific
Both Indonesia and Malaysia have robust arsenals of medium-range ASMs that, if these countries were willing, could effectively engage targets anywhere along the strait’s approximately 730-km length... would be difficult to defeat without employing land forces to locate these missile systems, which are mobile and relatively small in size ... Ships coming from the Indian Ocean could simply use the next-closest waterways, the Sunda and Lombok straits. However, the narrowness of these passages means that they could be easily covered with short-range missiles as well
The archipelago of 18,108 islands comprises 2.8 km2 (92,877 sq. km of inland waters), 1,826,440 km2 of land, and if the EEZ is factored in, the country’s area stretches to 7.9 million km2. Below is a map of Indonesia super imposed on Europe.
However. despite the vast expense, East-West orientation means its aligned with the trade winds, which provide conduit for trade and migration much like the Mediterranean

All the large states in Maritime Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia) are Austronesian Thalassocracies.
Roughly 97% of Indonesians are Austronesian/Part Austronesian. Indonesian as well as 400 other Austronesian languages are spoken as the native tongue by 98% of Indonesians.. Indonesia is the world's largest Austronesian country. Below are a maps of ethnic and religious distribution However, the map only shows the geographical spread based of their region of origin.
The first reason why I introduce Indonesia as an Austronesian entity, because there Austronesians elements in Indonesia's national symbols.
Secondly, it helps to understand Maritime Southeast Asia. The basic cultural identity of Maritime Southeast Asia is Austronesian. The salim gesture is found across the region, whether in the Philippines (referred to as Mano in the Philippines), Malaysia and in Indonesia from a governor, jungle nomads in Sumatra to Papuans living in coastal areas.. The non-Austronesian influences like Hindu-Buddhist, Muslim or Christian are layers of culture on top of the Austronesian core.
Lastly, Austronesian culture influences settlement and ultimately Indonesian geopolitics. According to Eurasianist Petr Savitsky, a civilization or group of people, have a specific mestorazvitie or place of development. This is to answer perrendial question whether Indonesia is going to invade Australia. The answer is no For Austronesians their mestorazvitie has been islands, particularly ones with volcanos. Austronesian civilizations are primarily found on sub-tropical/tropical volcanic islands. 90% of Austronesians live on volcanic islands, the volcanic soils compensate for the lack of large river basins.
Indonesia is the only major Island country aligned longitudinally. The foundation of longitudinal thalassocracies is trade, because of the alignment with East-West trade wins.
In the Mediterranean, Phoenician traders created the network of ports that eventually became the Carthaginian Empire. In the Baltic, it was German traders from Northern Germany travelling and setting up shop in various ports that laid the foundation for Hanseatic League.

Hanseatic League
In Indonesian archipelago, various migratory trading communities like the Malays in Western Indonesia and Bugis / Makassarsse in the Eastern Indonesia created a network that the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) grafted onto.
Another similar characteristic was the development of trading lingua franca, during the Iron Age in Mediterranean it was Phoenancian, Hanseatic League it was Middle Low German(MLG) and in the Indonesian archipelago it was Malay. In Indonesia, the influence of Malay was established even before it was adopted as Indonesia's national language. Malay creoles are spoken as the main language stretch from Jakarta to the Papuan Bird's Head.

The main geostrategic dichotomy in Indonesia is the Java (Core) vs outer islands (Periphery), it informs Indonesian debates on development, defense-security, and socio-political.
The island of Java was the population center of Maritime Southeast Asia. In 1800 it had a population greater than the rest of Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines combined. Even today, Java has only 6% of Indonesia land mass, but 57% of its population.
What made Java attractive for human habitation was the highest density of active volcanoes of the major islands in SEA, comparatively few earthquakes since its 500 km away from kilometers from major fault lines. Java resembles the Italian Peninsula in the Mediterranean, another location that benefited from volcanic soils.

A major debate in Indonesian discourse is the developmental inequality between Java )particularly Jakarta) and the rest. There have been accusations of Javanese Imperialism (the dominant ethnic group in Indonesia), that natural resources from the rest of Indonesia support Java. Reality is per capita incomes on Java are the same as the national average. This perception remains large because Java had a head start on development during the colonial period and it attracts a lot of investment relative to its physical area (50% of Indonesia's foreign investment ends up on Java)
From a defense viewpoint, the hard core and hallow periphery has been a characteristic vulnerability.
The Mongols in 1292 and Japanese in 1942 sailed right into Java with little resistance in the outer islands.
Japanese Invasion Route
The Java vs Outer island divide also translate into political differences. The Javanese (96% of who are Muslim)( vote for left wing secular / moderate Islamic parties / candidates, while non-Javanese Muslims vote for more right wing secular / hardline Islamic parties / candidates.

The foundation of the Indonesian state starts with the reign of Hanyakrakusuma (Sultan Agung) the third ruler of the Mataram Sultanate,1613-1645,
During his reign he expanded the Sultanate from Central Java to cover almost all of Java. Prior to his reign, kingdom in Indonesia were sea based trading kingdoms, with direct control over small pockets of land. It postulated that Sultan Agung believed you needed to conquer Java first, before conquering the rest of the archipelago. The Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit tried to do this, without bringing Western Java under their control.
Sultan Agung introduced a centralized administration to manage conquered territory, in contrast to the vassal system of a Mandala polity used before . He assigned adipati (Dukes) to rule provinces called kadipaten. In the past defeated enemies often continued to rule their fiefdom as vassals of the conquering kingdom; under Sultan Agung they were held as "prisoners" in the capital. As a result of the centralization and treatment of defeated enemies, the reign of Sultan's Agung and his successors was one of war. and rebellion
When the VOC took over Mataram territories in the mid-1700s, they kept this structure while only changing terminology. Adipati became Bupati (Regent or Regenten ) and kadipaten became Kebupaten (Regency or Regentschappen).. Indonesia still uses this structure, but with the province replacing the residency.
Until its bankruptcy in 1796, the VOC remained primarily a maritime trading concern, However, the plantations it setup in West Java in early 1700s, became the economic justification for territorial expansion and conquest that continued into late 20th century.
What made this expansion possible was the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, which resolved the long standing disputes between the Dutch and British, and set clear sphere of influence. It divided the Malacca Strait down the middle and established the borders of British Malaya and Dutch East Indies, and by extension modern day Malaysia and Indonesia.

Indonesia is a plantation-settler state, with the plantation and settler aspects separating and merging throughout history
The first Dutch plantations were built in West Java in the late 18th century
However, in 1800, much of Java was still jungle, but within a century Java was viewed by many as the world's most modern plantation economy. New lands were opened up, and peasants were forced to grow cash crops. Farmers allocated converted irrigated rice fields for cash crops, and marginal lands was used to grow corn, cassava and sweet potato. As a result Java was plagued by famines until the 1970s, when Suharto transitioned irrigated lands back to growing rice,
By the mid-19th century, the Dutch had opened up coffee and rubber plantations in Sumatra, and by 1880s they begin to import Javanese coolies.
From 1900-1960, plantation crops made up about 50-60% of Dutch East Indies/Indonesia exports. While Java transitioned away from plantation economy in the 1970s, the economies of the outer islands are still plantation economies. Palm Oil and other cash crops still make up 30% of Indonesia's exports.
Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines had government human resettlement programs. However, Indonesia's was the most extensive, 20 Million people and their descendants are products of the transmigration program.
There are four commonly cited reasons for the resettlement:
The first transmigration settlement was established in Lampung on the Southern tip of Sumatra in 1905. From 1949-67, about 578,000 transmigrants were sent.
Under Suharto from 1967-2000, Indonesia sent over 5.5 Million transmigrants, and during the peak from 1979-1984, they sent 2.4 Million. The majority were landless agricultural workers, Here is a map of all the transmigrant areas since 1905.
There were four categories of transmigrants. Transmigrants who migrated from another region (usually Java and Bali), those who moved from one settlement to another, those who were moved because of natural disasters and spontaneous migrants who funded their own expenses for the move.
Transmigrants were from one region (ie Java or Bali), but not from one particular village. In this period they usually settled non-Muslims in non-Muslim areas, largely to avoid conflicts over raising pigs.
Settlement were usually built away from the local villages/towns to avoid conflict. While in colonial and Sukarno era settlements transmigrants cleared the land, by 1970s infrastructure, housing and support facilities built before transmigrants arrived. The cost in 1977 to move a family of five was US$1200 and by the early 1990s it increased to US$4200 The cost included transport, land, housing materials, tools, seeds and initial food supplies. This is a significant sum given the country's per capita income was only US$500 in 1990. Indonesia funded this from government revenue and loans from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB)
Indonesia's plantations and settlements have been associated with Land Disputes and Environmental Destruction, Patronage and Corruption and Ethnic and Religious Conflict.
Land Disputes and Environmental Destruction
Most of the land disputes involving local inhabitants were with plantations and spontaneous migrants, Konsorsium Pembaruan Agraria (Consortium for Agrarian Reform, KPA), an Indonesian NGO, documented more than 650 land-related conflicts affecting over 650,000 households in 2017 ( 502,000 Ha ).
Indonesia has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with more than 74 million hectares (285,700 square miles) of rainforest, an area nearly twice the size of Japan - logged, burned or degraded in the last half century, according to Greenpeace.
Corruption and Patronage
The opening of new lands is a corrupt process even by Indonesian standards. Embezzlement is higher because new infrastructure is being built and due to distance from Jakarta.
The second type of corruption is the payment of bribes for permits, licenses and titles. Here is a list of recent cases
Lastly, both the Indonesian Military (particularly the Army) and Police were and are still involved in illicit activity, like smuggling, drug trafficking, protection rackets and illegal logging.
In respect, to the military, this participation is an offshoot of operating legitimate businesses from 1945-2010, and has been effectively phased out, The military involvement in business arose during the War of Independence 1945-49. when it had raise money to support themselves. In 2009, it was estimated the INdonesian military businesses had about US$350 Million in assets, and generated a profit of US$ 29.5 Million / year.. Because these enterprises no longer exist and also due to rise in retirement age, the Indonesian Army has hundreds of colonels and general with no functional position.
Given the scale of the program, the consensus among scholars is there has been relatively little ethnic and religious conflicts between transmigrants and local inhabitants,. Most of the violent incidents had occurred in Sukarno era projects where they put non-Muslim migrants in Muslim areas and vice versa like with Balinese Hindu migrants and Lampung natives in Sumatra (2012). Post-Sukarno era projects avoided this by trying to settle non-Muslim settlers in non-Muslim areas.

In this discussion, I will talk about physical infrastructure, and the government instruments used to secure control -- civilian bureaucracy and the military.
From the late 18th century until recently, the transportation network (roads, railways and ports) and irrigation systems were prioritized. The transportation networks were designed to transport crops(and later on natural resources from plantations and mines to nearby ports for export markets. At the moment only Java has a islandwide rail system and expressway. In all the other major islands, there is no expressway, just a series of roads connecting to each other, which may or may not form an island wide system.
Export manufacturing industries setup starting from the 1980s followed a similar pattern. Most export industries, like in the rest of Southeast Asia, are house in industrial estates
The focus of Power generation is to supply industry and industrial estates. As a result of this focus on industrial power generation, as recently as 2004 electrification was only 50% (now its 99.8%)
As a result of this estate focus, nationwide connectivity is still poor. Logistics sectors is plagued by long delivery times and unreliability.
After Reformasi, infrastructure spending dropped from 9% of GDP in the mid-1990s to 3.6% in 2014. However, as a result of big infrastructure push under the current President, Joko Widodo, as of 2019 its 6% of GDP. Since 2014, the focus has been to address issues of distribution and connectivity. Long delayed infrastructure projects like Trans Java expressway, Trans Papuan Road Network and Jakarta MRT have been completed
From the colonial era to 2003, the Indonesian state was centralized, the regional governments, provincial and district (regency) only controlled 14% of government expenditure. The center controlled nearly all capital expenditure. and executed programs based on centralized five year plans
The centralized bureaucracy was necessary to settle large numbers of people from one part of the country to another, because you have end to end control. In Indonesia, transmigration was handled and coordinated by Department of Transmigration.
After 1998, the Indonesian government implemented a big decentralizing push. The centralized Five Year Plans were scrapped, budgets, some revenue collecting authority, personal and assets were devolved to regional governments. 60% of central government bureaucracy had been transferred to regional governments (2.1 Million people)
At the core of Indonesia's military doctrine is Abdul Haris Nasution’s Fundamentals of Guerrilla Warfare (1953) who served as Army Chief of Staff from 1949-52 and 1955-66. Nasution, having fought on both sides, saw insurgency and counter insurgency as two sides of the same coin. Secondly, given the weakness of Indonesia navy and airforce, the external defense of Indonesia would be organized as a people's guerilla war with the military taking the lead role.
In addition, Nasution was a key proponent in the Indonesia's Army adoption of the Prussian Wehrkreis (military district) as a method of territorial defense and troop mobilization. The Indonesian Army has 15 KODAM (Komando Daerah Militer or Regional Military Commands) Each Kodam is divided smaller territorial units, with the smallest being village level command (BABINSA). At the center there is the Strategic Reserves (KOSTRAD) and the Special Forces (KOPASSUS)
There are three extra Kodam formed since the map was produced, Kodam Trikora has split into Kasuari and Cenderawasih, Kodam Wirabuana split into Hasanuddin and Merdeka.
Nasution also came up with the Military's dual function (Dwifungsi) role in 1955, which the government implemented in 1966. It stipulated beside the military's defense functions, the military should participate in every effort and activity of the people in the field of ideology, politics and economics. The military was given reserved seats in Parliament, as well as important positions in the civilian bureaucracy, state owned companies and regional government (city mayors and provincial governors).
The democratic transition had a major impact on the military in three ways. First the military no longer adheres to dwifungsi role. Reserved seats in parliament have been eliminated, and no longer parachuted into civilian positions like mayor. Secondly, the focus of the Indonesian military is now external defense. Thirdly, the budgets of the Navy and Airforce has been increased. Fourthly, the Armed Forces Chief of Staff is rotated between three branches, before it was held by an army generals. Since 2019, the Indonesian military has been organized on a joint command system Kogabwilhan (Komando Gabungan Wilayah Pertahanan) with a Western, Central and Eastern Joint Command.

2020.10.29 01:53 Gregordinary PrawnOS – A Debian-based Linux-libre distro for the Asus Chromebook C201, C100, C101P, and Samsung Chromebook Plus.

Background Over a year ago, I made a post about my experience with Linux on the Asus C201P, covering a few distros. Since that post I have stuck with PrawnOS and it has progressed quite a bit and is still an active project. Figured I would make an updated post with more detail on the Chromebook itself, its hardware, linux-libre support, and updates to PrawnOS. Let's dive in!
The Chromebook(S) My main focus here is going to be on the Asus Chromebook C201, but PrawnOS now also supports the Asus C100 (similar to the C201), the Asus C100P and the Samsung Chromebook Plus v1; the last two are ARM64 RK3399-based Chromebooks.
The C201 & C100 use a Rockchip RK3288 SoC. This is a 32-bit Quad Core ARM Cortex-A17 processor and a Quad Core ARM Mali-T760 GPU. In addition, there is a Hantro G1 VPU for accelerated video decoding.
Just because all these features exist on the Rk3288, doesn't mean they're supported by FOSS. Luckily, there has been a ton of work around this. With the exception of the Broadcom BCM4354 WiFi chip, every component of the C201 Chromebook is supported by free and open source software. This even includes the Embedded Controller Firmware and boot payload (Google provides source). It supports Libreboot, there really wasn't much to replace from the stock bootloader aside from references to non-free software like ChromeOS, but it's essentially already free and open source.
The Mail-T760 GPU Initially there was only support for 2D hardware acceleration with FOSS. Alyssa Rosenzweig has put in an amazing amount of work with support from Collabora on Panfrost, a free and open source graphics driver in Mesa that supports Midgard and Bifrost GPUs (which includes the Mali-T760). Panfrost has made a ton of progress and works on the C201 for 3D acceleration on both X11 and Wayland based environments. The latest release of PrawnOS is based on Debian Bullseye and includes support for Panfrost out of the box!
The Hantro G1 VPU It was discovered that this VPU existed on the RK3288 in this thread:
Oh, I might have forgot to mention, we accidentally found that on RK3288, the decoder is in fact an Hantro G1 (the full version), IMX8M has a small version of Hantro G1 (vp8 and h264 only).
The Hantro G1 VPU supports acceleration for a range of video formats including VP8 & H264. A kernel config (CONFIG_VIDEO_HANTRO) enables support for the VPU, but you still need a driver to make use of it. Which brings us to the Hantro VPU driver. Collabora has been doing work on this driver since kernel 5.0 and it officially landed in 5.3 with further improvements noted each kernel release (see mentions of "hantro" in Collabora Kernel Notes: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, and 5.8).
This is already working on other Rockchip-based devices and platforms (like kodi!) and just landed in the latest PrawnOS release. There is work underway to add support for this to the libva project. Other good news is that the latest Firefox on Linux can take advantage of the VAAPI, so this should eventually benefit from the VPU support.
BCM4354 WiFi This is the only component of the C201 that is not FOSS supported. So for a completely open system, you'll need to use an external WiFi chard with a libre-supported chipset like the AR9271.
One interesting note, is that a while back Cypress bought Broadcom's wireless division and has released the datasheets for a bunch of chips. Here is the PDF for the BCM4354 (now referred to as the CYW4354). Probably far-fetched, but gives me a glimmer of hope for free and open-source WiFi firmware.
PrawnOS Finally, the OS. PrawnOS is a Debian Bullseye-based distro using the GNU/Linux-Libre kernel. It supports the optional installation of a desktop environment via install script. Currently XFCE is default; LXQT and Gnome3 are available as well. Now that Panfrost acceleration is available, GNOME-3 runs smoothly. Support for full root file system encryption is also available.
You can expand the PrawnOS image to a microSD or USB thumbdrive; alternatively, you can install PrawnOS to the internal emmc drive of your Chromebook.
In my own tests, the system runs stable. Sound works, youtube playback is generally smooth in Firefox (not in 4k). This should improve as more support and improvements land in Panfrost and the Hantro VPU driver. HDMI output works fine at 1080p, once the 4k patches are merged, it will support 4k resolutions on external displays.
nezhac - In the thread last year you noted suspend was broken. That is now fixed in PrawnOS!
PrawnOS has seen both back and front-end improvements such as automated builds, hosting its own apt repository, switching to Debian Bullseye, support for some ARM64 Chromebooks, and plans made for Wayland-based desktop options.
I encourage users here with a compatible Chromebook (again that's the Asus Chromebook C100, C101, C201, and the Samsung Chromebook Plus v1) to take PrawnOS for a spin and provide feedback, report bugs, help with open issues, etc. I'm not a maintainer of the project, just an end user that has done a bit of testing and submitted a couple issues to the Github project and would love to see the project grow.
You can also chat about PrawnOS at #PrawnOS on Freenode IRC.
Trying it for Yourself You can either download a pre-built image, or for a more bleeding-edge build you can clone and build the image yourself.

Card Bard: From Paper to Sheets & Beyond
I have seen this question asked all over the place, including here. AND to my surprise, I've also seen my very own article posted here. I thought as my own board game campaign enters its final week and on the heels of our PnP tier announcement, it would make sense to post this for anyone that might need it or enjoy seeing some of our BTS processes.
One thing that I have not gone into great detail on is how we created the opportunity value calculation to help balance all of these cards which were created and used in the same google sheet we were storing all of our data to create our cards. I created a custom formula that rated each card on 17 different metrics to calculate a final value that represented the highest opportunity available for any given card. This helped us root out some cards that needed to be tweaked and really changed the way we thought about our balancing. If there is interest in that, I can create another post on how we went down the macro and formula rabbit hole and came out even more pumped.
If you would like to check out our campaign, we are in our final week and we are crossing our fingers and biting our nails at the same time! Take a look
Also, I would like to share another google sheets treasure with you guys at the bottom.
Going from hand-drawn card games and only in your head cards to the next step can feel really daunting but it’s much easier than you might think. After you have a good idea of if your card game will work and you’ve played through it several times with handmade components it may be time to move up. We’ll go over some of the tools we use on Card Bard like InDesign’s data merge tool and google sheets, plus putting it all together and some helpful game dev tips along the way.

Excel (or as with our own workflow google sheets) has lots of benefits, like organization, the ability to see things (component names and abilities as well as costs and power levels) all at a glance, for power users you can sort and even build charts and graphs to track and measure component in all sorts of ways (see “things” parenthetical) to help you in your game dev journey! A note of caution it’s easy to get bogged down in the particulars and stagnate your development, so try to do as little as possible at once, don’t jump straight into chart town if you’re just getting started moving from strictly pen and paper.

Step 1: Setup
Create a sheet with your game title and some pertinent information (development test version 1.0 or whatever is important to you) staying organized is key.

Now you will use row 1 as your titles/id row. In this row label each column with the title of information or images to be displayed on the component, in our example cards.

A note on the “@“ – we use Adobe inDesign to create our printable PDFs aka final product. This denotes to the program an image should be used for this data type. Other programs use this markup as well but some do not. We have also used which uses nearly the same techniques. Paperize does allow for images but when we used it was only using text.

Step 2: Fill ‘er Up!

Now that you have your data titles put in that data! Once we got our initial thoughts from pen and paper into our sheet this became where we put all of our new ideas and how we tracked changes and progress. Make sure this is a living document, not a stone tablet! Sometimes you may even need to add new data types, and that’s great! Do it here, and if you decide you don’t need it anymore trash that column. Filling is simple, place your names in the name column, your effects in the effects, and so on. For images, there are a few ways to handle it but the easiest and best for us is a relative file path.
Sounds scary, it’s stupid simple. We run off of Dropbox so each of us has all of our Card Bard files in the same spot… relatively. When you export the sheet it will just need to be in the same relative spot as the production files (in design files in our case) and it works out. So we have everything in the same spot and fill in our image columns like this:
The / in front is what makes it relative, which represents the current folder that the production files are housed.
You can name your files however and as long as they are spelled correctly everything will work out. For simplicities sake we have named all of our art files with the names of cards, some developers like to use a numbered system in case of names change, etc. totally up to you.

Step 3: Export Part One

Now that all of your data is in and you feel great about everything, export! Export your sheet as a CSV (comma-separated values) and save it in your favorite spot (Dropbox for us!)
Now if you are using InDesign or are curious to continue if not you may need to go to your program of choice to make sure everything goes right. Most programs use this same structure so you shouldn’t need to change much. We recommend but you can find other alternatives online, there are a few.

Step 4: Makin’ it

Now for the fun part (for designers), we make the cards! In the beginning, fight the urge to make it pretty. Just make it first, it needs to be legible… and that’s about it right now. Eventually, it will need to be legible, logical, and beautiful but we’ll get there! Create a new document that is letter size (8.5”x11” or “regular paper size”) and then save it in your favorite spot with a proper name. Create a rectangle with a small black outline that is the size of your cards. Ours are euro poker size 63mm x 88mm. Now create text boxes and image placeholder boxes for all of your data types and arrange them to match your paper version.

Step 5: Makin’ It Go!

Now the magic! Go to window>utilities>data merge. This will open up a new window with the data merge tools. On the top right of the window click the hamburger menu and choose “select data source”. Find your CSV and choose it. Now all of your data columns will appear in the window and you can drag and drop them onto your placeholders! Once you’ve matched them all up to their correct places you can click the preview button on the bottom left to see what it looks like!

The Drop Down Menus

Data Merge Window
Select Data Source

Step 6: Export Part Two – Electric Boogaloo

Now you will go to the hamburger menu on the data merge window again and select create the merged document. This will create all the variations from your sheet as cards! Things to check: All records were chosen Records per document > multiple records Multiple record layout set the spacing between columns and rows to zero, makes cutting easier (unless your cards are not rectangular) Once all your settings are set, click ok and watch it go! It should create a document filled with your beautiful (on the inside) cards!

Create Merged Document

Multiple Record Layout

Step 7: Export Part 3 – The Export Strikes Back

More exporting! Assuming all went well, and you had no errors (you can fix type overset errors by shrinking your font size or increasing your box size) now you gotta slap that export button one more time! File>export. The default is a pdf, set it to high-quality print (doesn’t REALLY matter) and hit export yet again. This will spit you out a PDF!

Export from InDesign

Step 8: Get Cutting

Get ready to make some card games! Print your pdf and get those scissors going!

Card Bard Print & Play PDF

Step 9: Enjoy!

Now play with your new cards, scratch out things write new things, and update your sheet with your test findings. Pro-tip: keep these for the museum exhibit for the future museum dedicated to your card games!

Another tool we used within google sheets to keep track of all of the chaos was… a calendar. Shocking, I know! But I was not satisfied with any of the calendars that I could find, specifically, the digital ones since a large portion of our development has happened during a pandemic. Having to do remote development is challenging and continues to be. SO I designed this calendar to help keep things straight. The difference between this calendar and others is it is consecutive! It's one long calendar and everything chains together, which I think is important when you are in ongoing development. If you are hiding things in tabs (or on other pages in a physical calendar) things can sneak up on you at the beginning of the month and stuff can be lost or forgotten. Plus you get to look back at how far you've come very easily and see all the days that you did something awesome! So I hope that this is a tool that is helpful for someone out there designing and dreaming their dream, take a look here. 2020.10.28 06:09 apersello34 I have a pdf in which the first half of the text is searchable with control F, but the second half isn't. How do I fix this?

I have a 150 page document that was originally two separate documents that were merged together. (I don't have access to the original 2 documents). The first ~70 pages have text that is searchable with control F, but after that (I'm assuming where the 2nd file was merged in), the text is no longer searchable on control F and I can't highlight it with my cursor. I've tried across multiple pdf-view apps, on my PC, mac, and iPad, so I'm fairly certain it is a problem with the document itself. How do I fix this?

2020.10.27 19:33 jerrol__ Multiple Word docs to one doc and on separate pages

Hi, I have a few (over 3,000) separate words documents and I’m hoping to merge them all into one word document, but (this is part I’m struggling with) I’m wanting each word doc to start on a new page
I’ve got as far as inserting a page break, but it seems to have to be done each time and then each word doc added one by one (via insert / object / text from file) I can’t seem to figure out how, or if that can be carried over automatically per new file inserted. I was hoping to select all 3,000+ and they just insert on a new page
Is this possible or am I best trying to find another solution? (Even converting multiple documents to PDF on a separate page would be great)
Any help would be amazing, thank you!

2020.10.27 02:43 un-pop-opinion Frustrated with selection of PDF software out there, please help

So I'm so frustrated that I actually finally created a Reddit account just to get some help with this lol. I do not understand the nature of PDFs and the myriad of unintuitive apps out there to read and edit them. I started volunteering at a non-profit and I have to build large case files. It involves scanning a lot of paperwork so I needed to get a scanner with an auto-feeder. I got a Brother L-5850DW.
It works great but for some reason I just can not seem to find an ideal solution in a single piece of PDF software. Right now I have the following software installed:
PDF Sam Enhanced
Foxit reader
Brother Utilities (came with printer)
Paperport 14 (came with printer)
Each of these has a function or two that I need, but I'm a minimalist when it comes to software and this is too many apps. Also why does all PDF software always seem so bloated and slow? I'm about due for a reformat and would like to find a single app that can do all I need when I reinstall. Preferably it could do all the following:
- Merge and split PDFs
- Scan documents to PDF
- OCR to take image PDF and convert to searchable text
- Settings where I can modify quality of PDF to fit within a certain file size
- Annotate and highlight text
- Preferably free but I am willing to pay
- Not slow and bloated
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

2020.10.26 01:14 playingpoodles PDFsam shipping with malware

They crippled the old version so it can't be used, and their latest 'free' version according to my Avast ships with a Trojan Malware. That would fit with the crippling of the old, wildly popular, version. If you need a light pdf editer eg for split/merge tasks, I find this list helpful: (though note some of the software there is paid with bait and switch free trials)

2020.10.24 11:01 estpenis Jung's description of Te

So I'm in the process of doing a word-for-word "translation" of Jung's Psychological Types to make it easier to understand. Once you cut through all the redundancies and impenetrable language, it's actually a pretty damn great resource. I'm about halfway done with the project and currently have all the extraverted functions done, and I'll continue to post function descriptions spaced out every day or so so as to not spam the sub. When I'm done with the project I'll post a pdf for you guys.
Anywho, here's Jung's description of Te, translated for modern times.
(Extraverted) Thinking
Extraverted thinking is conditioned in large measure by objective data transmitted through sense perceptions. For extraverted judgement as a whole, the valid and determining criterion is that which is taken from external conditions, whether this be an objectively perceptible fact or an objective idea; for an objective idea, even when sanctioned from a subject, is equally external and objective in origin. Extraverted thinking, therefore, need not be merely concrete. It may well be purely ideal if it can be shown that the ideas with which it is engaged are to a great extent borrowed from without, i.e transmitted by tradition and education. Therefore, the criteria as to whether or not one’s thinking is extraverted hangs upon whether it is furnished from without, or if its origin is subjective. A further criterion is afforded by the direction of the thinker’s conclusion, namely, whether or not the thinking has a preferential direction outwards.
That one’s thinking is preoccupied with concrete objects is no proof of its extraverted nature. One may be engaging their thoughts with a concrete object either because they are abstracting their thought from it, or because they are concretizing their thoughts with it. Even if one engages their thinking with concrete things, and to that extent could be described as extraverted, it remains questionable as far as whether their thinking in its further course leads back to objective data, external facts, and generally accepted ideas or not. So far as the practical thinking of the merchant, the engineer, or the natural science philosopher are concerned, the objective direction is at once manifest. But in the case of a philosopher, it is open to doubt whenever the course of his thinking is directed towards ideas. In such a case, before deciding, we must ask whether these ideas are mere abstractions from immediate experience, in which case they would merely represent higher collective concepts, or whether (if they are clearly not abstractions from immediate experience) they are derived from tradition or borrowed from the intellectual atmosphere of the time. In both cases, such ideas belong to the category of objective data, in which case this thinking should be called extraverted.
Though I do not propose to present the nature of introverted thinking at this point, it is essential that I make a few statements about it before going further. If one considers strictly what I have just said concerning extraverted thinking, one might easily conclude that such a statement includes everything that is generally understood as thinking. It might indeed be argued that a thinking whose aim is concerned neither with objective facts nor general ideas scarcely merits the name ‘thinking’. All thinking which attains visible form upon the world’s surface, whether as science, philosophy, or even art, either proceeds directly from objects or flows into general ideas. On either ground, though not always completely evident, such thinking at least appears essentially intelligible and therefore relatively valid.
There is also, however, an entirely different kind of thinking, to which the term “thinking” can hardly be denied: It is a kind that is neither orientated by immediate objective experience, nor is it concerned with general and objectively derived ideas. Such a thinking process may proceed from objective data, but it stands in constant relation to the subject. This parallel subjective process has a natural tendency, only relatively avoidable, to subjectify objective facts, i.e to assimilate them into the self. In its purest form, it is a form of thinking that proceeds from subjective data and is directed towards subjective ideas or facts of a subjective character. I term this subjective orientation of thought as introverted thinking. I do not wish to enter fully into this kind of thinking, but rather to contrast it with the extraverted thinking process in order to bring the nature of the latter into a clearer focus.
When the objective orientation receives a certain predominance, the thinking is extraverted. Since it is governed by objective data, is has the appearance of a sequence of external facts, as though it could only reach its highest point when chiming in with some established data. It seems constantly to be affected by objective data, drawing only those conclusions which substantially agree with it. Thus, it gives the introverted thinker an impression of a certain lack of freedom, of occasional short-sightedness, in spite of every kind of adroitness within the objectively circumscribed area.
This difference is pronounced most clearly when the extraverted thinking is engaged with material that is the result of introverted thinking. This happens, for instance, when a subjective conviction is interpreted analytically from objective facts or regarded as a byproduct or derivative of objective ideas. The difference between the two modes of thinking becomes still more obvious when the introverted thinker makes an attempt to bring objective idea into connections not objectively given, i.e to subordinate them to a subjective idea. Either senses the other as an encroachment, wherein either type reveals to the other its least favorable aspect. The introverted thinking then appears quite arbitrary, while the extraverted thinking seems to have an incommensurability that is altogether dull and banal. Thus the two standpoints are incessantly at war.
Such a conflict, we might think, could easily be adjusted if only we clearly discriminated ideas of a subjective nature to those of an objective nature. Such a discrimination is a matter of impossibility, though more than a few have attempted it. Both orientations are in themselves one-sided, with a definitely restricted validity; hence they both require this mutual correction. Introverted thought is at once sterilized whenever it is brought to any great extent under the influence of objective data, since it becomes degraded into a mere appendage of objective facts; in which case, it is no longer able to free itself from objective data for the purpose of establishing an abstract idea. The process of thought is reduced to a mere ‘reflection,’ not in the sense of meditation, but in the sense of a mere imitation that makes no essential affirmation beyond what was already visibly and immediately present in the objective data. Such a thinking process leads naturally and directly back to the objective fact, but never beyond it. Not once, therefore, can it lead to the coupling of experience with an objective idea. And, vice versa, when the extraverted thinker orients toward the objective idea, he is quite unable to infer the practical individual experience from it, but persists in a more-or-less tautological manner.
When extraverted thinking is subordinated to objective data, it proceeds to amass an accumulation of undigested empirical material. The oppressive mass of more or less disconnected individual ideas usually demands a psychological compensation. This must consist of an idea, just as simple as it is universal, which gives coherence to the heaped-up but intrinsically disconnected whole, or at least should provide an inkling of such a connection. Such ideas as “matter” or “energy” are suitable for this purpose. But, whenever the extraverted thinking depends not so much on external facts as upon an accepted or second-hand idea, the very poverty of the idea provokes a compensation in the form of a still more impressive accumulation of facts, which assume a one-sided grouping in keeping with the relatively restricted and sterile point of view, whereupon many valuable and sensible aspects of things automatically are discarded. An abundance of poor scientific literature today owes a large amount of its existence to this misorientation.
The Extraverted Thinking Type
The basic psychological functions in an individual seldom or never have the same strength or grade of development: as a rule, one function predominates. When supremacy among the psychological functions is given to thinking, the life of an individual is mainly ruled by thinking so that every important action proceeds from intellectually considered motives, or there is at least a tendency to conform to such motives. In such cases, we may fairly call this person a thinking type.
For the extraverted thinking type, we must picture a man whose constant aim – in so far, of course, as he is a pure type – is to bring his life activities in into relation with intellectual conclusions, which are always orientated by objective data, whether this be objective facts or generally valid ideas. This man gives the deciding voice, not merely for himself but for his entourage, either to the actual objective reality or to its objectively orientated, intellectual formula. By this formula are good and evil measured, and beauty and ugliness determined. All is right that corresponds with this formula, all is wrong that contradicts it, and everything neutral to it is purely accidental.
Because this formula seems to correspond with the meaning of the world, it also becomes a world-law whose realization must be achieved at all times and seasons, both individually and collectively. Just as the extraverted thinking type subordinates himself to his formula, his entourage, for their own good, must also obey it, since the man who refuses to obey is wrong. He is resisting the world-law, and is, therefore, unreasonable and immoral. The extraverted thinking type’s moral code forbids him to tolerate exceptions; his ideal must, under all circumstances, be realized; for in his eyes it is the purest conceivable formulation of objective reality, and, therefore, must also be generally valid truth, quite indispensible for the salvation of man. This is not from any great love for his neighbor, but from a higher standpoint of justice and truth. Everything in his own nature that appears to invalidate this formula is mere imperfection, an accidental misfire, something to be eliminated on the next occasion, or, in the event of further failure, clearly a sickness.
If tolerance for the sick, suffering or deranged should happen to be an ingredient in this intellectual formula, special provisions will be devised for humane societies, hospitals, prisons, colonies, and so forth – or at least extensive plans for such projects. In the actual execution of these schemes, the motives of justice and truth do not, as a rule, suffice; they proceed more upon proper Christian charity, which is to do more with feeling than with any intellectual ‘one really should’ or ‘one must’ figure in an extravarted thinker’s formula. If the formula is wide enough, it may play a very useful role in social life, as a reformer of public wrongs or a purifier of public conscience, or as a propagator of important innovations. But the more rigid the formula, the more the extraverted thinker develops into a grumbler, a crafty reasoner, and a self-righteous critic, who aims to assimilate both himself and others into one schema.
The influence of such personalities are all the more favorable and beneficial the further one goes from their epicenter, at the periphery of their sphere of influence. The further we penetrate into their own province, the more the unfavorable results of their tyranny become apparent. At the periphery, the truth of the formula can be sensed as an estimable adjunct to the rest. The further we probe into the special sphere where the formula operates, the more we find life ebbing away from all that fails to coincide with its dictates. Usually it is the nearest relatives who have to taste the most disagreeable results of an extraverted thinking formula, since they are the first to be unmercifully blessed with it. But above all, it is the extraverted thinker himself who suffers the most – which brings us to the other side of the psychology of this type.
The fact that an intellectual formula has never been and never will be discovered which could embrace the abundant possibilities of life in a fitting expression must lead – where such a formula is accepted – to an inhibition, if not total exclusion, of other highly important forms and activities of life. All those vital forms dependent upon feeling will become repressed in such a type, as, for instance, aesthetic activities, taste, artistic sense, the art of friendship, etc. Irrational forms, such as religious experiences, passions and the like, are often obliterated to the point of complete unconsciousness. Sooner or later, the forms of life repressed by the intellectual attitude become indirectly perceptible, through a gradual disturbance of the conscious conduct of life. Whenever disturbances of this kind reach a peak intensity, one speaks of a neurosis. In most cases, however, it does not go so far, because the individual instinctively allows himself some preventative softening of his formula – worded, of course, in a suitable and reasonable way. In this way a release valve is created.
The relative unconsciousness of such tendencies that are excluded from any participation on the conscious attitude keeps them in a relatively underdeveloped state. To the extent that they are unconscious, they become merged with other contents of the unconscious, from which they acquire a bizarre character. To the extent that they are conscious, they play only a secondary role, though one of considerable importance for the whole psychological picture.
Since feelings are the first to oppose and contradict the rigid intellectual formula, upon them the most intense repression falls. No function can be entirely eliminated – it can only be greatly distorted. Insofar as feelings allow themselves to be arbitrarily shaped and subordinated, they have to support the intellectual conscious attitude and adapt themselves to its aims. Only to a certain degree is this possible. Should the repression of feeling succeed, it proceeds to unfold a subconscious activity, which runs counter to conscious aims, even producing effects whose causation is a complete enigma to the individual.
For example, conscious altruism, often of an extremely high order, may be crossed by a secret selfishness of which the individual is wholly unaware, and which impresses intrinsically unselfish actions with the stamp of selfishness. Purely ethical aims may lead the individual into critical situations, which sometimes have more than a semblance of being decided by quite other than ethical motives. There are extraverted idealists, whose desire to advance the salvation of man is so consuming that they will not shrink from any lying and dishonest means in the pursuit of their ideal. There are a few painful examples in science where investigators of the highest esteem, from a profound conviction of the truth and general validity of their formula, have not scrupled to falsify evidence. This is sanctioned by the formula; the end justifieth the means. Only an inferior function, operating seductively and unconsciously, could bring about such aberrations in otherwise reputable men.
The inferiority of feeling in this type manifests itself in other ways. The conscious attitude becomes impersonal often to such a degree that very considerable harm is done to personal interests. When the conscious thinking attitude is extreme, all personal considerations recede from view, even those which concern the individual’s own person. His health is neglected, his social position deteriorates. Often the most vital interests of his family are violated – they are wronged morally and financially, even their physical health is made to suffer, all in the service of the ideal. At all events, personal sympathy with others must be impaired, unless it too happens to be in the service of the same formula. Hence it not infrequently happens that his immediate family circle, his own children for instance, only know such a father as a cruel tyrant, whilst the outer world resounds with the fame of his humanity.
Not so much in spite of, but because of, the highly impersonal character of the conscious attitude, the unconscious feelings are highly personal and oversensitive, giving rise to certain prejudices. For instance: a decided readiness to misconstrue any objective opposition to his formula as personal ill-will, or a constant tendency to make negative suppositions of others in order to invalidate their arguments beforehand. As a result of this unconscious sensitivity, his expression and tone frequently become sharp, pointed and aggressive. His feelings have an untimely and halting character, which is always the mark of an inferior function.
However generous the individual sacrifice to the intellectual goal is, the feelings are correspondingly petty, suspicious, crossgrained and conservative. Everything new that is not already contained within the formula is viewed through the lens of the unconscious and judged accordingly. For example: certain physician, famed for his humanitarianism, threatened to dismiss an assistant for daring to use a thermometer, because the formula decreed that fever shall be recognized through the pulse.
Thinking which in other respects may be altogether blameless becomes all the more prejudicially affected the more that feelings are repressed. An intellectual standpoint which, on account of its actual intrinsic value, justifiably claims general recognition, undergoes a characteristic alteration through the influence of this unconscious personal sensitivity; it becomes rigidly dogmatic. The personal assertion is transferred to the intellectual standpoint: truth is no longer left to work her natural effect, but through an identification with the subject she is treated like a sensitive darling whom an evil-minded critic has wronged. The critic is demolished, if possible with personal invective, and no argument is too gross to be used against him. Truth must be trotted out until it finally begins to dawn on the public that the question is not so much one of truth but of the man who waves her banner.
Although reason itself offers proof that every intellectual formula can be no more than a partial truth, and can never lay claim, therefore, to autocratic authority; in practice, the formula attains so great an ascendancy that, beside it, every other standpoint and possibility recedes into the background. It replaces all the more general, less defined, and hence more modest and truthful, views of life. Thus the formula becomes a religion, although it, in its essentials, has not the smallest connotation with anything religious. It also gains the essentially religious character of absoluteness. It becomes, as it were, an intellectual superstition.
In this state, all those psychological tendencies that suffer under its repression become grouped together in the unconscious and form an equally antithetical counter-position, giving rise to paroxysms of doubt. As a defense against doubt, the conscious attitude grows fanatical. For fanaticism, after all, is merely overcompensated doubt. For example, an extreme irrationality develops in opposition to the conscious rationalism, or the unconscious becomes highly archaic and superstitious in opposition to a conscious standpoint imbued with modern science. This fatal opposition is the source of those narrow-minded and ridiculous views, familiar to historians of science, into which many praiseworthy pioneers have ultimately blundered.

2020.10.23 10:33 Logiman43 How PIS destroyed Poland.

EDIT: This post is in an article format with pictures and graphs here
I can't be silent anymore. In 2018, out of 1076 abortions in Poland, 1 was because of rape, 25 because it was dangerous for the woman's life and 1050 because of an unhealthy fetus. It means that PIS just totally banned abortion in Poland
Too few Europeans are aware of the depth of this crisis. The current Polish government is destroying the country from inside-out with its nepotism, religious zeal, communistic tactics, social programs and funding verge organizations (or trolls). It breaks every single law, making unconstitutional laws since 2015 and destroying the court of law. How Poland is pushing EU into crisis - rise of populism. The video is 2 years old and now it's worst
PIS staffed every single judicial court with its own people (ending the impartiality of judges). The very aggressive social 500+ program increased the job inactivity of Poles to 48% (48% of 15+ Polish citizens are NEET. Unemployment is at 5-6%). The Job vacancies in Poland are at the lowest level in EU. The corruption and nepotism is rampant, more than 1000 family members and friends are in public companies or in different Ministries. Polish PIS high ranking politicians are also making money together with pimps and mafia (see scandals down there). They are also giving millions of euros from public money to the Catholic Church. They are paying trolls to spew hate on Facebook, via Whatsapp and on the web. Some of them are hiding and not prosecuting pedophiles in the Catholic Church. Poland has almost the lowest innovation in EU. In 15 indexes tracking freedom and democracy in Europe Poland went from an average position of 12 out of 28 in 2010 to 23 out of 28 in 2019. I mean, not to diminish Trump’s “awesomeness” but imagine if the WHOLE republican party in the US was Trump-like. Shady deals, family in the govt, creating discord, staffing courts with their own judges. I’m just mortified.

Destruction of the rule of law.

Some of the passages below are taken from this pdf
No member state in the history of the EU has ever gone as far in subjugating its courts to executive control as the current Polish government. The Polish case has become a test whether it is possible to create a Soviet-style justice system in an EU member state; a system where the control of courts, prosecutors and judges lies with the executive and a single party.
Across Europe, national courts recognise the judgements of courts in other member states, whether these involve commercial law, the European arrest warrant or child custody. Judges must assume that courts across the EU operate according to common values and principles set out in the European Union Treaty and in its Charter of Fundamental Rights. Once judges across the EU have reason to doubt whether courts in any member state provide effective judicial protection, the legal order on which the EU rests collapses.
Freedom house - How PIS captured Poland’s Courts

Constitutional Tribunal changes

It all began with the constitutional crisis four years ago. Constitutional crisis and the destruction of the rule of law In 2015, parliament changed the law on the Constitutional Tribunal, which rules on the constitutionality of legislation. The changes allowed them to annul the nominations of three judges made by the previous parliament and appoint their own. It shortened the terms of the tribunal's president and vice-president from nine to three years. The tribunal ruled the move unconstitutional in an open rebellion, but the dispute remains unresolved. Julia Przylebska - was illegally named the president of the Tribunal court by the president. And now Kaczynski, the PM have meetings at her house. Nice separation of power
There's too much to describe. For further info please visit the link. It is an amazing summary of the whole ordeal. timeline

Supreme Court changes

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said one of the most controversial reforms was to do with the Supreme court, which, among other duties, is responsible for confirming election results. The idea was to lower the age of retirement for Supreme Court justices from 70 to 65, but allow the Polish president to grant a five-year extension to whomever they deemed worthy. In 2019, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) — the EU's highest court —ruled this was illegal, after an interim decision ordered 20 already-sacked judges be reinstated. Of course, PIS chose 2 new Constitutional judges, A politician Pawlowicz with communistic past and Piotrowicz, also a politician and a prosecutor that was an active communist during the 80 that prosecuted Solidarnosc. Both of them are above 65 years old.

Ordinary court judges

There were also moves to try a similar tactic in the general court system for judges and public prosecutors, lowering the age of retirement for women to 60 and for men to 65, down from the current 67. Under the reforms the justice minister, who is appointed by the ruling party, would have the power to extend a judge's term. The laws were somewhat adjusted after pressure from the European Commission, but in November 2019 the ECJ shot down these laws, too, citing gender discrimination and political influence over the judiciary.

Disciplinary measures for judges

Another PiS addition allowed judges to be investigated and sanctioned for their court rulings. The disciplinary hearings and procedures were to be carried out by judges selected via parliament. These reforms were criticized by the European Commission because "judges are not insulated from political control and thus judicial independence is violated." The commission brought legal action against Poland on this matter in October 2019.

National Council of the judiciary takeover

In 2017 PiS remodeled the National Council of the Judiciary, which selects candidates for appointment as judges by the President of the Republic. This allowed it, in the short term, to control appointments to the Supreme Court – including to a newly created Disciplinary Chamber, which hears disciplinary cases against judges, and to a new Extraordinary Appeals Chamber, which adjudicates on electoral issues. Over time PiS’ take-over of the National Judicial Council allows it to reshape the entirety of the judiciary. Fifteen of the 25 members of the National Council of the Judiciary were previously elected by judges themselves, as is common practice across Europe for such bodies. These fifteen judges are now elected by the majority in the Sejm, the lower chamber of the Polish parliament. The other ten members of the National Council of the Judiciary are: four members from the Sejm itself (all four members of PiS), two members from the Senate, one representative of the President of the Republic, the Minister of Justice, the president of the Supreme Court and the president of the Supreme Administrative Court. In total 23 of the 25 positions are directly appointed by political authorities.
After the election of the new KRS, a publication of the list with the names of judges declaring their support for specific candidates was refused. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled that those names must be disclosed. However, the Chancellery of the Sejm has yet to carry out the NSA’s ruling. The bill also allows to fire judges ( which is unconstitutional according to the Constitution). Illegal presidential pardon for CBA chief Kaminski In 2013, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Mariusz Kamiński – who served as head of the anti-corruption agency from 2006 and 2009 – was found guilty of overstepping his powers. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was banned from holding public office for ten years. Polish President Andrzej Duda pardoned Kamiński even though he was still appealing his sentence at the time. The case against Kamiński was then discontinued. A supreme court judge said that the president interfered in the legal process because Kamiński was proven neither innocent nor guilty when he was pardoned, making a future ruling redundant. The judge said that the president can pardon someone after any final appeal has been heard “because then he is not interfering with the judiciary”.

Merging the General Prosecutor with the political Minister of Justice

The general prosecutor role was merged with the minister of justice Ziobro. source. This handed Ziobro and his subordinates greatly expanded power to politically interfere with rank-and-file prosecutors, their decisions, and their freedoms of speech and association. Poland Is Purging Its Prosecutors
200+ public prosecutors that are loyal to the Minister of Justice Ziobro (from PIS) All of them got promotions (or someone from their family) or pay raises. another list

Destroying the military

The creation of a territorial defense unit- a civilian army led by the ministry of defense to control “the situation inside Poland”. In addition, there was a purge of generals. and killing multibillion deals with France. About 37 generals and 47 colonels left. Why? Because they had to answer to a 27-year old assistant to the Defense Minister, former pharmacy assistant without a university degree. The Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper reported that Misiewicz was given a top communications job with PGZ ( largest defense consortiums in Central Europe) that pays $12,500 a month, huge sum in a country where the average pre-tax wage is about $1,150 a month. source
PIS decides to overhaul 40-years old t-72 instead of investing in German tanks. Not enough ammunition, uniforms NVG and other gadget went to the above unit,
In 2015, the Defence minister Macierewicz raided the Nato center in Warsaw at 1am to take control of documents and place their man at the helm

The ministry of Justice is funding trolls to destroy judges

Ziobro-Piebiak paid Troll scandal The Onet news portal published a report alleging that Deputy Justice Minister Łukasz Piebiak “arranged and controlled” an online campaign against Judge Krystian Markiewicz, the head of Iustitia, a judicial organization critical of the government’s efforts to restructure the judicial system, as well as against other inconvenient judges. According to the Onet report, Piebiak operated and financed an online campaign by a woman called Emilia who allegedly sent over 2,000 letters and emails about Markiewicz to other judges as well as to pro-government right-wing media. The messages contained fabricated, semi-confirmed and gossipy details of the judge’s personal life. According to Onet, Emilia obtained Markiewicz’s personal address from Piebiak so she could send him one of the letters.

Taking over the state media

State media was taken over by PIS and is using mass propaganda and here Not only they are a propaganda tube but they also offend polish citizens ie – translation: defenders of pedophiles and alimonies-takers are the ones against judiciary reforms. They call every peaceful protest as a coup
The same can be said about the GUS – general statistical bureau. It is controlled by PIS and it is known to “change” metrics so every Inflation or unemployment metrics can’t be trusted.

LBGT-free zones and Xenophobia.

Fear against refugees and calls for xenophobia. A leaked draft of a new Polish migration policy discriminates against Muslims, ranks foreigners according to ethnicity and breaches human rights
My article Why the Polish government is against LGBT?
PIS is supporting LGBT free zones where a thrid of Poland is declared as LGBT-free. During the presidential elections in 2020 Gay “ideology” is worse than communism, says Duda - PIS president.

Destroying education and HealthCare.

PIS cancels the in vitro program Polish government program that covered most of the in vitro costs was immediately cut by the Law and Justice Party when it came to power in late 2015, even though Poland has one of the lowest birth rates in the EU. Catholic Church opposition to IVF is widely seen as one factor in the Polish government's decision.
PIS also increased the minimum wage at the beginning of 2020. It created a weird paradox where a teacher and a starting MD is earning less than the minimal wage because they get paid from public money and the minimal wage change is for the private sector. And PIS wants to ban sex ed by labeling teachers as gay activists and pedophiles. Critics say Poland’s governing Law and Justice Party is wrecking the education system for political gain — and students are suffering.

Destruction of the oldest European forest in Poland by Minister of Environment Szyszko The Bialowieza Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site that sprawls across the border between Poland and Belarus, occupying almost 580 square miles of woodland and providing home to rare European wood bison among others. At least 10,000 trees are thought to have been felled in Białowieża, since the Polish environment minister, Jan Szyzko tripled logging limits there in 2016. The EU’s highest court has ruled that Poland’s logging in the Unesco-protected Białowieża forest is illegal, potentially opening the door to multi-million euro fines.
“Our (water) resources are comparable to those of Egypt,” it said in the report bearing the ominous title: “Poland, European Desert”

Nepotism and colleagues in state-owned companies

PIS won the elections by wanting to fight nepotism. The most famous was “24yo Misiewicz, a former pharmacy assistant without a university degree was in the defense industry under Macierewicz. The apparent favoritism has raised ethics concerns in a party that won office promising to fight corruption.” source There is even a webpage listing more than 1000 cases of nepotism under PIS Pisiewicze
Latest data show 162M PLN to 84 PIS oligarchs and Colleagues

Illegal budget for 2017

The 2017 budget "was adopted" not in the Sejm assembly hall, but in a smaller room where the so-called parliamentary session was held immediately as a follow-up to the meeting of the parliamentary causus of PIS, where no reliable counting of vates was possible, and with many allegations taht the opposition MPs were not allowed in. [Constitutional Democracy in Crisis?, Oxfoord, 2018, p.268]

Ex-communists in PIS ranks. And PIS is very anti-left and anti-PRL.

They are accusing the opposition – PO - to consist mostly of ex-communists or communistic party members or collaborators. The issue is that most members of PO fought against the communism and spent months/years in prison in the ’80. On the other hand, the PIS party members scarcely fought for polish liberty and some of its party members are former communistic party members or communistic prosecutors like Piotrowicz! Some Polish TC judge are also ex-PRL members. Here is a list in polish of all current PIS party members who served as PRL members during the communistic era. So, PIS is fighting against itself. Another list with 20 names of ex-party members now in PIS

Funding the Catholic church with public money

PIS is very Pro-Catholic, most of their voters are devout Catholics. So it is no surprise that PIS is funding religious orgs from public money. Since Law and Justice came to power in 2015, Father Rydzyk’s businesses have received at least $55 million in subsidies from at least 10 ministries and state companies. His Radio Maryja station, which reaches millions and is often the sole source of information for many older voters in rural Poland, offers a daily diet of horror stories about a world without faith, where gay people control the political agenda, universities are corrupted by “neo-Marxists,” and the Roman Catholic Church is under mortal threat. Rydzyk Embroiled in Corruption Allegations
Hiding Pedophilia. Map of 259 victims of catholic pedophilia. When a documentary was released before recent local elections revealing devastating examples of how priests sexually abused children and how church officials covered it up, many in PIS saw it not as evidence of an institution that lost its way, but one that needed to be defended. Piotrowicz, the above communist prosecutor, dismissed in 2001 a case against a priest accused of raping six girls.
Polish PIS president Duda pardons a paedophile that raped his own daughter. He makes the pardon a week before elections

Smolensk commission

The so-called assassination of Kaczynski's twin president brother in Smolensk created 90M PLN of costs. PIS created a "cult" around his death and even created a special commission that would prove it was an assassination. Kaczynski was using it on every occasion Don't wipe your treacherous mugs with .... Ofc they didn’t prove anything and they buried the topic. Every 10th of every month for 3 years, PIS party leader Kaczynski was making a "show" commemorating his dead twin brother. He was using the police to secure his demonstration even if he has no lawful power (he is neither a president, neither the prime minister). New law expanding police surveillance and the police is getting raises after raises to keep them happy. The commemorations, the commission and the damages (paid only to the politicians’ families, not to the crew) amounted to 91M PLN.

The welfare revolution

PIS is also very pro-family. The party is giving away 500zl per month for every kid. In short, it has “bought” the elections. The polish economy is unable to sustain such an endeavor roots of populism. And it costs the economy 80B PLN between 2016 and 2019. The best part? Rate of births is negative for the last couple of years and inflation is still growing. According to the PIS Stats bureau it is 3.5% and growing. However, many journalists made their own baskets of normal good and services and the inflation is closer to 10%. Additionally there is a growing debt that PIS tries to hide by shifting some debt into other Funds. One of them is the “Solidarity fund” that is not counted in the overall polish GDP, that is to support people with disabilities will pay for the 13th and 14th pension of people 65+.

Funding propaganda and trolls

Computational Propaganda in Poland: Russian troll factories
PIS bought the Pegasus spyware to spy on its citizens In September 2018, private broadcaster TVN24 reported that Poland’s state audit body, NIK, was questioning an outlay of over 33 million zloty (€7.6 million euro) by the Justice Fund, a government fund to help victims of crime. According to TVN, the money went toward the purchase of a “new system to spy on telephones and computers, the most expensive system in the history of Polish secret services.” Reports that the covertly purchased system could be Pegasus — a top-performing spyware that is impossible to track — surfaced last week.
Polish troll farms promoting Duda and Kaczynski

Funding public TV stations

Polish public TV stations should be impartial and public. Not favoring any party nor government and give the same screen time to every party equally. Unfortunately, there was a purge of journalists the moment PIS won the election and the propaganda is stalin-like. Look at this graph how it changed. Polish TVP is the mouthpiece of the govt. In 2020 PIS voted to give an additional 2B pln per year for 5 years to public tv.
Public Main TV making fun of US ambassador by reading the tweet with a derogatory accent

PIS has hundreds of scandals that each would destroy a modern government. They defrauded billions of PLN over the years, put 1000’s of family members in different state-owned companies. Below are listed the main sexual and financial scandals.
  1. Sex hotel of the head of the Audit office Marian Banaś , a Law and Justice (PiS) politician and recently appointed chief of Poland’s Supreme Audit Office has been heavily embroiled in a corruption scandal, another to hit the ruling party just weeks before the country votes in a parliamentary election. Mr Banaś served as finance minister from June to August this year, and is a key figure in the party. Mr Banaś concealed his possession of a tenement house in Krakow from his financial disclosures. This property was then revealed to have deep running connections with a local, criminally-run escort agency. He claimed that the house was given to him by an old friend whom he met in the Home Army, which he then renovated. In his disclosures, he claimed he would sell the house, which never happened. Banaś claims that this was due to the buyer’s inability to get a loan. Investigations have further revealed that Mr Banaś agreed to rent the property for 5000 zloty a month, 10,000 zloty lower than its estimated market value, according to Gazeta Wyborcza. Just as the scandal could not apparently get any worse for Mr Banaś, further investigation by journalist Bertold Kittel revealed criminal links. When Mr Kittel entered the property he found at the reception an infamous Krakow criminal known as one of the brothers K – Wiesław or Janusz, who control escort agencies in the region. While still under investigation, there have been suggestions of contact between the two.
  2. "Alleged" Pedophila and Sex trafficking scandal of House speaker Wirtualna Polska learned the contents of the message of CBA officer Wojciech J. to the prosecutor's office about the failure of the head of the CBA, Ernest Bejda. In the background is a lost record with a recording of one of the leading PiS politicians who should have sex with a minor Ukrainian girl lost. His name falls on the document. In the message, Wojciech J. refers to several reports that he was the head of the office in connection with the "unauthorized access to his armored cabinet during his absence" submitted. From this vault, a record should be lost in escort agencies from the Podkarpacie region. One of the leading PiS politicians should have sex with a young Ukrainian in the recording. The statement signed by lawyer Beata Bosak-Kruczek mentions the name of Sejm spokesman Marek Kuchciński.
  3. Health minister Szumowski alleged to have bought £1m of PPE from ski instructor friend during pandemic. And givng away £65m grants to companies run by brother public anger has exploded after Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza reported that Szumowski bought masks with fake certificates from a skiing instructor who is friends with his businessman brother, Marcin. Poland’s Health Ministry reportedly spent five million zloty (£1m) on 120,000 FFP-2 type face masks and 20,000 surgical masks that were later found not to meet safety standards, Politico says. The company that sold the masks was registered on the 30 of March and won the govt. contract on the same day. Critics have also questioned Szumowski’s previous dealings in government. Polish news network tvn24 reports that while serving as deputy science minister in 2016-17, he gave 300 million zloty (£60m) in grants from Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) to OncoArendi Therapeutics, a research company run by his brother. Another company in which Szumowski was a shareholder, Life Science Innovation (LSI), was reportedly given a 24 million zloty (£5m) NCBR grant just days after he took up the ministerial post.
  4. Same Health minister Szumowski bought 1.2 thousand ventilators for PLN 200 million from a company owned by an arms dealer, not a single device was delivered

2020.10.22 16:25 Splicernetworkz Is Samsung notes messed up?

So to leave things short and simple, ever since I updated my notes app to the latest version I can no longer merge pdfs together and get a new pdf. Instead what ends up happening is I get a white pdf thats much larger than the original amount that only has blank white pages on every screen.
I've been able to fix this by resetting my notes back to its original version, but I have to do this every time.
Is there anyway to fix this?

2020.10.22 15:17 PinkCanoeDaVagoo Spells of Yathuna - New 5e Setting with over 120 new spells!

Hello everyone,
It has been quite some time since I have posted anything new. This is Dakota, the original creator of Balasar's Guide to Exploration. Since its original release in 2018, there have been over 18,000 downloads, and an overall rating of 4.6/5 stars on the DMs Guild. I could have never dreams of something so great.
My last few projects (unreleased, however) are being merged into one large, fantastic PDF for everyone to enjoy. May I officially announce Yathuna: Remnants of the Hedrons. This PDF is a campaign setting for 5e, though it does revamp quite a bit. This world, known as Yathuna, is full of wonderous and untamed lands, where only the strong can survive the constantly changing landscape. If you have played Magic the Gathering and are familiar with the Zendikar setting, this should feel somewhat similar.
This preview is of the spells available within the PDF, which amounts to 126 total spells. These spells fall into one of four categories - Arcane, Curses, Divine, and Hedrics. Hedric magic is a special type of magic, derived from the five remaining hedrons in the world, crafted from an extinct race from long ago. These hedrons are special within Yathuna - due to the ever explosive and dangerous changes in the land that occur randomly, known as Tremors, the hedrons are able to stabilize the land for whatever innate reason. These pockets of land have allowed civilization to flourish, which is now known as the Five Kingdoms.
Hedric magic, however, deals with space, time and gravity. Unfortunately, with Matthew Mercer's Wildemount settings released, they have a magic known as Dunamancy. While I was in the middle of creating hedric magic for the past 2 years, this had been released, so some overlapping spells and themes may be apparent.
I hope you all enjoy this and give constructive feedback on anything that may need to be changed or adjusted. Many of these spells have already been tested during the Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign I have been running, and have been balanced to them. However, the balance and teamwork of my group may been different from yourself or the base game.
Look forward to Yathuna: Remnants of the Hedrons release in the next year! When it does release, it will contains all of its content on DnD Beyond as well, so you can immediately add it to your own campaigns and use the content.
You can find the spells here.

2020.10.22 05:04 ganjaptics Are there third party tools for analyzing Schwab portfolio performance?

Is there a third party tool that I can connect to Schwab to get a simple, accurate overview of what is going on with my money?

2020.10.21 22:30 The_Jaeger_Bomb Batch Combine Multiple Files into Multiple PDF's Based on Partial Name and Rename

Well if my title isnt confusing enough here we go. New to reddit, seasoned programmer, slammed at work and looking for some assistance from the community.
So i get "document packages" from my customer with multiple .pdf, .doc, .tiff files that correspond to different part numbers, multiple part numbers, and all in one folder. If you look below you will see an example of files.

Each file from the customer has a format
XXXX-XXXXX = Part Number (will refer to as PN) (This is the important part and common part between same PN)
AA = Revision (usually in the 00 or 000 format 00 being a number 01 to 99, 000 representing no revision)
Green = Green (always shows up in their files)
Status = Low, Medium, High (IP status)
FX = F1, F2 … FN (designation of part of the file or page of the file etc)
.extension = file type (.pdf, .tif, .doc)

What is important is the XXXX-XXXXX part number as I want to take all files that contain the same part number and convert to pdf and combine them into one pdf file titled XXXX-XXXXX.pdf
I would like to be able to point to a folder that contains all of these files, and have this done automatically (hopefully) OR be able to generate a file list (could use cmd to do so) and then take that file list and use it to generate lines with files to be combined and an output name. but thats way more effort than being able to point to a location and have it automatically gather for examples all files that contain the same first XXXX-XXXXX (10 characters), send all those to be combined into one PDF, and name it those first 10 characters XXXX-XXXXX.pdf in the same location.
It would also be nice for it to then move the files USED to a new folder in the location called ARCHIVE or take all the NEW COMBINED files and put them in a new folder COMBINED or something along those lines.
In an instance where there is only ONE file XXXX-XXXXX_AA_Green_Status_FX.extension i would still like it to convert to pdf, and rename as XXXX-XXXXX.pdf.
Help would be appreciated.
Here are some references that touch on similar things:

See below for examples.

2020.10.20 23:47 stb654 Lines on Solid Hatches

Hi all,
I've been able to use solid hatches with transparency values and have them plot fine.
Now however when I'm using DWG to PDF I get lines galore on my solid hatches that previously were fine. I'll even get some hatches disappear totally. Perhaps I've changed a setting somewhere? I've tried all the guidance such as lines merge etc.
The only thing that will work is switching to an alternate pc3 plotter. These however, don't plot how I want them to, or print files x10 as large!
Are far as im aware I have not changed anything, perhaps I have an outdated DWG to PDF or something!?
Thanks in advance, this has wasted soo much time!
